Just checked the uk call checker to see who is the cheapest and although there is an 0845 option there is none for 0844 - are these the same price calls? If not, who is the cheapest to call these type of numbers? I have looked on saynotto0870 and no alternative number.

Thanks

Tried 18185 and it wouldn't let me call the 0844 number so I had to go through BT :( - this is my new doctors number - on BT website it says for the 0844 calls

"National numbers where calls by BT customers are charged at up to 5p per minute."

Will check tomorrow to see how much this call actually cost me!

Just found a free number for USA and Canada from talk2talk.tel. It is 0207 028 8888. It says peak time weekdays for free!

I can't work out the catch, their weekend rate is 0.5p by 08430 450 450. Both numbers are to landlines only.

Hmm. Not sure. Looks great (particularly the 4p/minute 0843 gateway number for calling UK mobiles).

Then I read some of the small print and it doesn't ring true.
*Free calls depending on BT tariff. Free calls on your mobile depend on your contract.
Peak times are 8am-6pm Mon-Fri. Off Peak times are at evenings 6pm-8am and weekends from Fri midnight to Sun midnight. All calls using the 08 numbers are subject to a 6p connection charge. When using the 08 numbers, calls are charged from the moment you are connected. Your telephone service provider will bill you in the normal way for all calls. All prices are quoted for customers using a BT residential line. If you are using a non BT residential line or your mobile to make calls, please check with your service provider as to how much you will be charged for dialling one of our access numbers.
6p connection? If, as they state, "All prices are quoted for customers using a BT residential line" perhaps they could explain how users are going to get a 3.9p discount on their connection charge from BT.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Well, their single-page website appears to say that using their 0843 0 110 110 gateway number would get you those (from a BT landline) for 4p/minute 'all day' (which I assume means 'at any time') and, as there are no national flags in that blue box, I also assume that means UK.

However, the need to make assumptions is worrying.

Tried to call via a 'CheapestCalls' number at 0.5p/min (0844 200 6565) but they appear to be having widespread capacity issues as this isn't the first such incident with this company.

There was a recorded message on the number which advised checking their website for updates, which has no information at all about the problems that Cheapest Calls are experiencing.

If anyone is thinking about using this provider, I would suggest you try the next available option. With a ~10p connection fee per call, even listening to the recorded message is going to incur unnecessary costs and quite possibly negate any saving.

Hopefully the company will resolve these issues but I'd rather stay away until we know for sure that they are back up and running.

Since the BT evening rate now starts at 7pm - if we are on Primus Saver free evening calls - does this start at 7pm as well, on BT line , or remain at 6pm? Main article says from 6pm but can someone else confirm?

Primus 'evenings' are still 6pm to 8am.

• I was reading Callchecker info today and noticed some info that might be misleading, so thought I would provide feedback by emailing callchecker@moneysavingexpert.com as suggested on the page...

I got an almost instant automated reply with FAQ's telling me that if my query was not answered I should forward my query to callchecker2@moneysavingexpert.com, which I have tried in several different ways over the last few minutes, but I keep getting the same automated FAQ email (from callchecker - without the 2) in response which is still advising me to forward my query to callchecker2@moneysavingexpert.com.

Am I missing something or is the moneysavingexpert email system in some sort of endless loop?!

My queries are not answered as well. Looks like Martin is on holiday and this part of site is left a little loosy :(
