No it doesnt know!!!, it always says 4p even if you call it from a mobile.

This is what they say on 0844calls site.

"The price stated behind every access number is all-inclusive (including VAT). There are no further subscription or connection costs for the international call. Our access numbers are available from BT, Telewest and NTL landlines, mobile phones, pay phones and other call providers. The rates stated are based on BT rates, for all other operators, including mobile operators, please check with your provider for the rates they charge to our access numbers. Calling from a mobile phone or payphone may be surcharged by your operator. We cannot influence the rates charged by other operators as non BT operators set their own charges on their billing systems. For more information see our Q&A-section. "

Int CallChecker shows 0p/min Teletop rate for calls to Russia. In fact the rate is 2p/min. It shows many providers with 2p/min+ rates, but fails to show 18185 rate 1p/min.
  • Thanks for the info Grumbler - this has now been corrected.

Thats because it only covers calls from the UK.;)

Have a look at this site http://www.dialabroad.co.uk/spain/

    or
    http://www.teleconnect.es/en/902.jsp

Or if its for a residents landline(CPS Service)

    Try http://www.euphony.es/

    Or http://www.direct-telecom.es/

Do we know if it is possible to make even cheaper international calls by using pre-paid phonecards?

While I was in Australia I found the best way to call home was using a phonecard I bought from any newsagent. For those interested - it was a GPS Silver Phonecard $10 and gave me easily over 500 minutes calling to a landline in the UK.

So, that's Aus$0.02 (2 Australian cents) per minute.

Calls to an Australian landline from a UK BT residential landline can cost as little as £0.005/minute (half a penny or eight tenths of an Australian cent per minute) via an 0844 200 xxxx dial-through number (see the MSE International Callchecker).

I wouldn't even bother trying to find a phonecard with that so easily available to everyone.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
