Heinz wrote:Using a BT landline, you dial the 0844 gateway number and, at the point you reach the gateway (the voice prompt telling you to start dialling your international 'target' number), BT charge you a 3p 'call set-up fee' and start charging you 3p per minute.
That means that, if your 'target' number is engaged or dialling it fails, BT will have charged you the 3p 'call set-up fee' plus 3p per minute until the moment at which you hang up.
There are no other charges, the cost of the call (connected or not, see above) is charged by BT and appears on your BT bill.
So, as well as being charged 3p per min from 0844, I will also be charged 3p per min from BT aswell? Or do you mean I will be charged 3p per min in total?
Sorry, if I'm sounding a bit dumb.0 -

Nobody else charges anything - how would they get your money?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

I decided today to try to use http://www.teletop.co.uk. I need to dial a premium rate number first to get £1.50 f credit onto my account. The problem is although their 0208 access number is available the premium rate number is permanently engaged. Has anyone else managed to get through to it?0

I've never succeeded in finding precisely what Talk Talk charges for calling 0844 numbers in their online published list but, seeing that the highest Premium Rate charge is £1.65/minute, I'd say they charge 10% more than BT (BT's highest Premium Rate charge is £1.50/minute).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. I use 0844 thru talktalk to access international calls and seem to be charged 0.35p + VAT for the "1/2p" and 0.6p + VAT for the "1p" services. No complaints really about the basic landline service, which also enables me to call talktalk signed-up rels anytime for free.0

On the international call checker for calling Zimbabwean mobiles, Ratebuster and Cleverates are listed. However, with these access numbers you can't call Econet (area code 91), which is the most popular mobile network in Zimbabwe. You can only call NetOne and Telecel (which have lower termination charges than Econet, but don't have much coverage or many customers).
Ratebuster 7p/min
(0871 806 0000)
Cleverates 10p/min
(0871 280 2525)0 -
Just to let you know that PhoneCheap have increased their rates for mobile phones to 6p/min, and there is a new access number: 0871 754 42 42
More info at: http://www.phonecheap.co.uk/rates.php
Does anyone have any idea whether the PhoneCheap service is better than the 18185 service at 6p/min that also has a 5p connection fee?0
