Oh, thanks for the reminder on the fruit - I meant to cover them with a net last weekend and forgot. So I will have to make a half hour over the weekend to get to the plot and do that.

Yes, there is. You can either put them in a cage where they can't go broody (I hate this option and never do it but as you say, they can be very drained by repeated bouts of broodiness, so...)
I really hated the idea of it as well, but chickens go downhill so quickly when they are broody it really is in their best interest to get it over with as soon as poss if you don't want to use the broodyness.
And it works really well and they don't mind at all I've found. Just some fresh air under their bum :)

    Good.

TBH,so long as we don't have one that goes broody ALL summer....and it happens, off chicks, back on the nest, I don't mind atm.

I've heard some folks dip their hens behinds in a bucket of cold water!

Hen under tree has 7 chicks - 3 male, 4 female plus I've added two that hatched out from cooker - which may or may not be a good idea. Another 4 hatched out into cooker - maybe some more to come.
Very cold out with a stiff breeze & heavy showers.
New mum ensconsed in new run with new house but wants to be outside with her chicks so that is where they are - under mum outdoors. Other hens looking in at her & you can almost see them going broody - that's what's happened in the past - goes through them like a virus.

Still trying to get neighbours' garden in shape before OH picks them up from airport tomorrow - quick lunch, chick check & then up the road for me.

Well, the 3 chooks went back into Peckadilly Circus today, but half an hour later the Vorwerk took off out of there. :( It's 2m high, so that bird did some take off! Proves what I've always thought; they could get out of the orchard if they wanted to.

Is that indoors or out? None of ours is anywhere near ripe, but at least I cleared the bed of weeds a few days ago, so we can find them now! :o

Out, in a container, though the ones in beds will be there in a week

But our toms, though doing fine, are flowering but no baby toms yet

The bay tree looks very sad after the hard winter and cutting out the dead wood

The compost heap squashes are settling in nicely

The invicta goosegogs which replaced the blueberries last year are thriving

And its a blooming lovely time of year (if you dont mind the dustbathing holes made by the chooks in the grass paths!)

It was Bargain Hunt. One of the sellers had a stall with loads of welsh blankets, I think some of them were quilted too. The competitors didn't buy as they were so expensive. Can't think which day it was now though. Tuesday?

Cheers Annie, had good success with a squash on a compost heap a year back so this year I've got them on 3 heaps, each composted with garden material/chicken poo but topped up with free municipal compost, a bit of store compost around the roots and planted in a depression covered in plastic to channel rain. So its a bit of an experiment this year but hoping for good results!

Big concern was whether it would be too rich but so far it seems fine.

Alfie, good luck with your open days, dont forget to relax every so often.
