I was wondering, with the chainsaw carving. aybe they can make it into a sort of unicorn horn obelisk. to put back out there where it should be.

A bit like the one in the Botanic Gardens, Bath?

What happened to the poo picker/sucker, you were thinking about acquiring?

Still thinking about it! Undecided as to model and now waiting to see whats happening about biomass system...if one type will be better than another. Have decided definitely to go for a hoover not a sweeper...but still the two I think I posted before...its not clear to me which is better. They do demos, but they only pick up half a dozen poops. I want to see things like how handleable it is when full, how easy to empty alone etc etc...so I'll have to negotiate strongly for that.

ATM its not so bad out there, they produce about a wheel barrow a day each...I have a supper big wheelbarrow which makes that a bout a big barrow and a half. But I can't be sure I'd get the wheelbarrow back in atm.

How about going on a equestrian forum and seeing if someone has one that you are looking at and seeing how they get on with it and if you can find someone close enough, you may be able to have a look at it in action.
Long shot, but it's alot of money you are looking at spending.

I was thinking this morning that atm you could do with a little quad bike with a trailer, or a garden tractor with the same. But of course if you don't have anything like that now, it doesn't really make any sense to invest in one, when it's not the long term aim. And you still have to pick the poo up by hand.

What's the deal with picking it up anyway? I think you may have explained this before, do you not have enough land to rotate the horses often enough, or is it parasite problems you are avoiding?
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

    hi all,
well iv just taken delivery [been sat like a lemon frightened to go even in the back garden to return to a "missed you" note on the door!!] of a new 16" chainsaw and brush cutter/strimmer...
i got them really so my son can get extra work to help him save for thier deposit on thier 1st house. hes going to go for a chainsawing cert so he knows what hes doing [and for my piece of mind!!] theres lots of clearing jobs round here and he gets good money but he has been limited to clearing up rather than doing it all by his lack of tools.... plus i get jobs done !! he was helping out at the Berkshire fire last weekend, he said it was devastating!! just like a blackened desolate wilderness.

anyway my chooklets are great, my mummy duck is great, my 3 pidgeons are great...ish [they are roosting in my eaves!] none of my eggs have hatched [me thinks little pekin males firing blanks!] one of my mad polish banties is sitting on eggs now [male is a black silky?? so should be different!] so if she remembers where they are and what to do i may have success but im not holding my breath ! they are so dippy it beggars belief !!

LTR ....i should have shown you what a friend did with all his tree stumps ! but souns like yours is not quite big enough. i think i could carve under your artistic guidance with a chainsaw ! iv done it before but we are not talking stubbs more picasso !!!!
if you ever have a day job that you need help with, im holding my hand up to help..... seriously...so dont struggle if i can help.

I've done this :) WARNING: huge generalisation ahead: Horse people are crazy and v. biased. They all swear by their choices because their choices in their heads, show how much they love their horses. So their vet is the best, their saddle is the best, their equipment is the best. Alternatively, you get those for whom NOTHING is good enough the vet, the equipment...

So, they either say theirs is great and the others are rubbish, or that none are good and they do it by hand. Very, very many people don't do it at all.

Parasites. Exactly . we use anthelmintics v. rarely. We use one annually for the types of worm you can't do an egg count for ang then do periodic egg counts. we have a really low stocking rate atm, but also inherited ''clean'' land as far as horses were concerned. I'd like to keep it as clean as possible: its just good practise really (with any species of animal!)

re quad bike, its not the worst idea, its easier than a LR for the machines anyway. DH wants a kit tractor eventually (I really miss that roll eyes smiley). As we bought attachments we'd become less and less reliant on contractors.:D

I saw someone on telly who had a chicken "clean up crew" which ate all the bugs in the dropping of the other animals.

Might be a bit impractical (they had a mobile chicken shed and just rotated the livestock/chickens), but you might be able to come up with something along the same lines.

    What are Welsh blankets?

Just had really heavy rain & throughout the night so the ground is well & truly watered at last. feels much cooler though.
Still no signs of chicks in either cooker or under tree - getting concerned now.
