Hen under tree has chicks - hurray, but don't know how many as she's still sat drying them off & it's wicked rain & gales now. Will lift her in the morning to her new house & run. Tempted to lift her now but will wait.

Been trying to do the neighbours garden in the rain as they will be back from hols on Sat & the weeds are this high.

Yes -she's been under the tree for over three weeks. Mind you it's been so dry until this last couple of days. She's actually very sheltered where she is - they're not daft.

The Orps were still out so I knelt down to look in their house & the massive black lad pecked my hand. Got me on a vein. I got a right fright. I think he thought I had food as I can hand feed them and he's normally docile. I think I'm gonna have quite a bruise tomorrow & it's almost broken the skin - quite a mess.

Got the stove lit tonight. Caravan rocking in the wind. It's wild out, trees are lashing about. Thought we'd get water out of tap but OH investigated & our pipe that goes up the hill has sprung a leak. Will have to wait until Monday before we go anywhere to get some.

Gonna have some toast now. Back to being inside a drum.

    First strawb ready for picking!

Although the veg were held back by the early dry weather, the soft fruit looks set for a bumper harvest, all bar the summer raspberries which seem to have a virus and I think will need taking out later in the year :(

wretched birds picked all the green currents off while we were away....how id they know??

Our strawbs aren't ready yet, but there are oooodles of them....by the looks of it we might get a small bowlful on the same day, not one with a long wait inbetween the next! At least we're on track with strawbs in our self provision aims!

Is that indoors or out? None of ours is anywhere near ripe, but at least I cleared the bed of weeds a few days ago, so we can find them now! :o

I've been working on the veg plot for a couple of days, so the seed onions are in, having been transplanted as a bit of an experiment. Yesterday, I cleared one area I'd been putting off, which was where a supposedly thornless (and tasteless!) blackberry had been, surrounded by its thorny children. That, plus a nice bed of nettles, made for an interesting mix. Anyway, there's a couple of courgettes on there for now, till I see what pops up again.;)

Early spot spraying on the thistles seems to have worked well, but now I have to go to the bottom fence and lever out all the blackthorn and other trees that are trying to make a return to the spots we cleared-back last autumn.

We have 3 broody hens, including one that has been that way for about 6 weeks now. Is there anything one can do about it if they sit in the hen house all day? We've been giving extra feeds to the one that's been like it longest because she was beginning to look quite poorly.

We have a sale in the Village Hall to go to tomorrow, so that will be an extra bit of publicity. Sales have been slow here, and we need better signage.

    .

Yes, there is. You can either put them in a cage where they can't go broody (I hate this option and never do it but as you say, they can be very drained by repeated bouts of broodiness, so...) or you can pop some eggs under them....if you have 3 broodies you could buy half a dozen eggs of the next breed your DW wants and give them 2 each....if one goes off the others can take them on.

They do look poorly and I turf them off the eggs twice a day to get a drink and some water. Closer to the end I give them food and water in ramekins where they are :o

Their comb often fades and they can lose a lot of weight ..and often, they'll just not go of brood till they finally have a chick (sometimes they'll share one or two).

It was Bargain Hunt. One of the sellers had a stall with loads of welsh blankets, I think some of them were quilted too. The competitors didn't buy as they were so expensive. Can't think which day it was now though. Tuesday?

OH went to the house yesterday and hoovered the new carpets finally, so we'll start taking some of the smaller furniture over. No gardening, but refilled the bird feeders. I haven't been there since the weekend as after the 2 days running seeing the GrandTwins I am totally worn out plus yesterday I woke at 2am and couldn't get back to sleep. Needless to say I dropped off about 10 mins into a programme I really wanted to watch last night, so had 10 hours sleep last night and am feeling somewhat more perky this morning.

Really need to go hat shopping for wedding this afternoon, but not sure I really feel up to it. Also need a long slip to go under my dress (linen and just a bit see-through) - seems really hard to get them, saw one possible on the M&S website, but out of stock in my size. So will have to do both John Lewis and M&S plus we need to look at washing machines and fridge/freezers too.

Might think of doing some gently gardening this afternoon and hit the shops tomorrow or Sunday instead. If I leave it till next weekend it's just getting a bit too close to when we leave for London (Thursday 26th). It'll be fun to stay in a hotel, been ages since we did, last time was for DD2s wedding. I'm a sucker for cooked breakfasts! :o

Thanks for the info on broodies, lir. That's more or less what we are doing, as regards turfng them out. Dolly, the longest running, gets 1/2 hour in the garden and special rations then, but always lets us know when she wants to go home again by standing at the gate to the chicken orchard.

Yesterday,we put all 3 into Peckadilly Circus for the afternoon, but as you say, they didn't like it and kicked-up merry hell! :rotfl:
