You could do worse than watching a bit of day time TV, books tend to give upper estimates of value and not actual prices achieved at auction. Just remember though that the cash in the attic style programmes never mention all the sellers fees, and they often still fail to actually make a profit. It will however give you an idea of names and styles to watch for.
Mind you, be prepared for a shock, how I wish I had watched daytime TV *before* I spent £20 on a box full of wedgwood ornaments that you now can't give away.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. If you just want ideas of what to look out for I recommend the Millers Collectables Books like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Collectables-Price-Judith-Millers-Guides/dp/1405322179/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237572261&sr=8-6 (rather than the Antiques versions) - ignore the valuations but for images and a bit of info to help you look out for goodies they are great. I read them like novels, bought one today from the Antiques Roadshow (from the charity shop)

No carboot sales at all round here this weekend, so I think today I'm going to take a trip to a town a few miles away and do a bit of charity shop browsing there! It's a fairly affluent town so might pick up something good!
Good luck those of you bargain hunting today!0 -

:rotfl: I know I am rubbish with china/pottery. I do take your point I have seen myself that 50's mass produced china does not go for a fraction of what is suggested if you look on Ebay. I have a really bad memory though and looking at pictures in books helps lock in the info:D0 -
