I am enjoying this thread BUT I do wonder about the ethical point of buying from a charity shop to then make a profit by selling it on via Ebay.
Am I just being too sensitive? I often see things that make me thinks wow - recently an Avoca jacket for £5 which I know would make £40 +. I ended up telling the shop manager that they either needed to reprice the item or put it on ebay for the charity.
I would happily buy from private car booters to make a profit.
My best charity shop bargains recently are a north face fleece for 50p, M&S jeans £1 and a Rohan outdoor shirt £2. All for me and being well used.Jane 21120 -

I wonder whether they re-priced it? Its swings and roundabouts I think with the prices they ask. Primark stuff selling for more than it originally cost, designer pieces selling for way less. I think most of the shops are clued up as to the prices they should ask. As for buying from a car booter, how do you know they are not raising cash as they need money to pay the mortgage, feed the kids etc (ok - a bit dramatic but some people might be fairly skint these days). Perhaps you should give them a nod that the ming vase they're selling for a pound might be worth a bit more. Then again...0 -
I've done the decent thing on many occasions. Last summer there was a very "down-at-heel" family selling a silk Monsoon dress (complete with £125 price tag) for £3. I suggested they put it on eBay but they just said that they couldn't be bothered but why didn't I buy it off them and do it? I did and made £45. :T
Charity shops are given the items for free and generally have a rough pricing structure (the one I used to work in did). If the stuff is keenly priced it will sell quickly and the stock will constantly change making the shop interesting to visit.
If stock is priced highly it can hang around for ages on the off-chance that someone with lots of money will recognise the label and buy it. In the meantime people will stop visiting the shop so often as the same items are in there all the time.0 -
A prime example of Charity Shop pricing was in evidence at a Cancer Research Shop near me today.
Item 1 - A summer blouse, white Indian cotton, well used from Primark priced at £6.50.
Item 2 - A BNWT linen Monsoon jacket, original price £55.00, charity price £15.00.
I know which one I'd rather buy, but resisted the jacket.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

I totally agree with the charity shop pricing structure.
I used to help out at a 'pricepoint' Oxfam. (Oxfam have about 3 'different' charity shops each working on different principles). Each genre of cothing had a fixed price - so a blouse was £1.99 whether it was Primark or Monsoon. Therefore stuff moved quickly, and when we a glut of stock we had a 99p an item day. It was the biggest grossing charity shop in the town, and it got closed down.
We did have a rail with indiviually priced items and this was were the proper designer stuff went. Ebay wasn't really in existence at this time.
Nowadays the CS do have a funny attitude to pricing, as mentioned above. Primark stuff dearer than new, and decent labels very often at good prices. I do also point out when they have overpriced something - they must love me!!Jane 21120 -
I'm not going to comment on the charity shop aspect as on many many threads in the past its always turned into an arguement about whether its right or wrong to buy from them and sell. Lets get back to the great bargains...
