Well, I wouldn't drizzle the cake if you're going to put a fondant covering over it... But if you wanted to soak the cake in a lemon syrup I guess you could - but just try and be a bit more accurate pouring it over the holes rather than all over the top.
However, it's normally traditional when you're making a decorative cake to use as firm a cake as possible to help support it and keep the corners neat in the edges - eg, the American's quite often make a pound cake.
It normally goes - thick cake > crumb coating > butter cream layer > fondant. I've skipped one or two of these stages before but in my opinion doing all three really gives you the best and sharpest result, and I wonder as it's a novelty shape whether it'd be wise to do these? This means you need to start very early or the day before though which is a bit of a pain.0 -
hmmm, ok, maybe a rethink then. I was just hoping to do a flavoured cake rather than a plain madeira - any ideas for a firmer type one with a flavour? The shape isn't going to be too complex- effectively just a "Y" shape, so I'm hoping that fondanting over won't be too tricky?"Science is a wonderful thing if one does not have to earn one's living at it" Einstein 19510

maybe a lemon madeira with buttercream and lemon curd inside? or chocolate with choc buttercream?0

Why not add lots of lemon zest to the mix, and I second the lemon curd sandwich idea. Are you making your own fondant? If so, can you use some lemon juice rather than water in the recipe?Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

There's a good lemon cake recipe on the good food site, they used it as a layer in a wedding cake. It's basically a dense Lemon Drizzle cake, as it still uses a lemon syrup so sounds like what you want. I made the chocolate layer a few weeks ago and it was amazing so I'm thinking the Lemon one would be good too.June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500
