Play.com Fraud - warning

Well, apparently they have closed my account without telling me. When questioned about fraud at Play.com the young lady said it was the first time she had heard of anything for a long time.
I informed her and asked why the previous person at Play.com had only advised me to change the e-mail and password without mentioning that the account will be closed, she replied, "I don't know."
I then asked to speak to the fraud dept and after being on hold for a fw mins was told, "I can't put you through as they are busy." I bet they are.
they deal with other things too you know. the fraud team, playtrade and accounts are all the same people with only a few in the team. My account was hacked due to fraud and they close it as a security measure. She was right, why should she know why someone told you to change your email and password when that is clearly wrong! shes only doing her job. lay off her.0 -

Do you happen to work for play.com?? In one way or another a lot of people on this thread have had pretty poor experiences with play, and we are quite entitled to express our dissatisfaction without people telling us to lay off :mad:I am finally a homeowner!!:beer:0 -

I haven't placcd an order with play in many months. In fact (luckily?) I read this thread a few weeks ago and was no longer confident in play.com holding my card details, so changed a few key bits of info.
Anyway low and behold, I log in and they've suspended my account. I certainly do not give them permission to validate my card every now and again when they fancy it - I'd rather they don't hold my card details at all and have to enter them as a one off each transaction I do make - but surely this doesn't give them the right to suspend my account?
Ridiculous really. I called all the phone lines - they're down and they're the only info available to me now my account is suspended. Have emailed the customer care team - thanks jb5
But really - this is SHOCKING!
pippitypipI know I'm in my own little world, but it's ok - they know me here!0 -
Anybody thought about reporting this to BBC Watchdog? Might be an idea.0

Here's my story. It's odd to say the least.
We used to use an M&S Card. The Tesco one was maxxed out. A rejig of our finances last month saw all balances cleared including Tesco. So we start using the Tesco card. But not until around 20th August or so.
So, yesterday, we have a charge £39.99 Xbox game on 11th August. Oddly this is around the time that I changed my Play login to a ficiticious number because I wanted, effectively, to close the account.
My own account shows no orders at Play since April.
However, a quick call to Play confirms I have ANOTHER account! Which, and even they accept, is not me. Though it is in my name. They confirm that account used the Tesco CC details on the 11th August and has just done another. they have closed mine and the false account immediately.
They also say that, on the false account, £340 was spent in July. No account in my name has, to my knowledge, had £340 taken out in July! The fraud woman said it was complex, she could not tell me the 4 digit number for THAT order but confirms it was not my Tesco one. She was confident that those orders, though in my name to a different address were NOT done on any card belonging to me.
The other thing is that I'm not even sure my Tesco CC was registered on Play. But, if it were not, why not order loads of stuff, whcih they have clearly not done.
The bizarre thing is that the order appears about the same time as I changed card details to a false one. Others have reported that.
What on earth is going on at Play? A combination of fraud and some weird combining of customer info? Could it be the case that somehow their databases are screwed up and it's not fraud at all?

It is fraud. Just look at the number of people that have posted in this thread detailing their experiences.
The fraudsters don't want to use their "real" name and address details in case they get a visit from the police.
It looks like in your case they have obtained your details from hacking into Play.com, and to try and delay as long as possible you finding out about the fraud, they set up another account with your details but using an email address they have set up and have access to. They can then make orders and have them sent to a dead drop address and you are never notifed via email of the orders.
The £340 worth of transactions must have been done with a different credit card (probably some other poor sod they have nicked the details from).
Fraudster usually try a test purchase first to try out the card, they then may sell on the details or account for others to use. There are websites offering these details for sale on the internet.
More of a concern is them nicking your identity to do the frauds.0 -

Oddly she confirmed they were using my email address on the separate account as well.0
