I found the information from Internet: "Who pays for credit card fraud? In the U.S.A. the short answer is the merchant; in other countries it is the card issuer (a lot of the cards are issued by the Banks).

I also thought that the customer must request that a chargeback be made.

They are getting away with it because the cost of investigating a fraud is usually higher than the cost of just writing it off.

Sorry - I didn't mean to sound patronsing or anything. Although victims of fraud will (Should) initially be refunded by their bank or card issuer, you can be sure that they (The bank/card issuer) will reclaim the money from the retailer quick as a flash in all instacnes.

On 5 Sept 08 someone ordered 2 Nokia mobile phones and 2 PC games by adding themselves to my account as a "Relative". He/she is listed as EP Inch, delivery address 73 Riverview Park, SE6 4PL. Up to this point I had been a regular Play customer, ordering goods on at least a monthly basis.

On receiving the confirmation email, I emailed Play via the website but just got the standard "Your enquiry is being dealt with and we aim to reply to you within 24 hours" (incidentally finding contact details on their website was v difficult). When I was not contacted back over the weekend or on Monday, I phoned them. They were aware of the problem and my account had been blocked - but they hadn't bothered to inform me and the money had already been taken from my card! They assured me that the goods would not be dispatched. I was told to report it to the police and get a crime number, and to my bank to cancel my card and obtain a chargeback. I have been unable to remove this person from my Play account (which is blocked), and had lots of hassle visiting police station, bank, form filling, 3-way call between me, Play and bank, etc. This seemed a well-trodden path for Play.

I am convinced that my account details were not hacked into from my PC - I have secure network, anti-malware, firewall, etc, etc. Having read this thread I am sure there is something amiss at Play. My suggestion is that goods should not be able to be delivered to a non-cardholder address without additional security checks.

I am also upset that there is no way of removing card details from your account, or of opting out of storing them. They have lost my confidence and custom - I wonder if they care? Would love to see a Watchdog piece on them.

you will probably be fine. Just wait until the order has been dispatched then change your card details to one of the fake ones mentioned earlier in this thread. Just keep an eye on your emails to check nothing that you haven't ordered gets dispatched.

  • I ordered something a couple of weeks ago from play (before noticing this thread!!!)

OMG - they seemed unable to put the order through and started testing my card putting through 4 lots of £1 requests which made the fraud department stop my card leading to two other orders being rejected at other places. What a nightmare...just got off phone with my card company and they have been great and sorted it out.

Have logged into play and my card number comes up as my login user!!!! Talk about disgusting security!!! I have logged in and changed all my name and details and DOB even though couldnt change my card number. Will ring tomorrow and get my account deleted.

I know i haven't lost any money and have cancelled order. Sorry for those that have :(

Of course Play know they have been hacked. Just look at the number of people that have posted in this thread, and this only includes people that have took the time to register and post a message. Think of how many other people that have had fraudulent transactions which may have read this thread but didn't post a message.

The fraud is also posted in other forums such as:

    http://www.creditcardhelp.org.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=104

Play are not going to admit it because it would be suicide (business wise) to admit their lax payment security on their website.

Last week my credit card issuer rang me to say that they had cancelled my card due to a breach of security at a place where I had previoulsy used my card. I'm not saying that it is play.com but when I checked my account at play.com, I had used this credit card to make my last order.

In light of this I logged into my Amazon account, which I have not used for 5 months at least

It had every card I had ever used saved  since 2003

I have now deleted all of them
Potentially someone could have hit the jackpot if they had got into mine I had paid with business cards, personal card, debit card and a credit card
I never realised this would be stored long term

Phew thank you I shall be VERY VERY careful in future due to this post
    :T :T :T :T :T :T :T

To be fair to Amazon if you enter a new address you have to re-enter your card details. This has to be done every time you first associate a card with an address. So without knowledge of your card details it would be unlikely anyone will be able to do much with your account.
