Play.com Fraud - warning

Play really does need to do something about this as it seems to be happening too frequently. At the least they should not require you to store your card details on the site. They could also allow you to use paypal instead. Until they do something I'm going to keep well away.0

Their customer service is bad I agree however on a few occasions its been ok. Last year I ordered a book for my mothers birthday (in march so doesnt interfere with xmas delays). Book never arrived so I got an alternative present and rang customer services about a month later after forgetting all about it. They dispatched a new book the following day and it was received 2 days later. A week later a neighbour of mine knocks the door with a brown play.com package. Lo - and - behold it was the book so I rang play and explained and they just told me to keep it! oh well.Like what I said? click thanks!:rotfl: :rotfl:

I've found Play's customer servie to be surly and aggressive. For some reason they've taken £5 out of my account despite me not having logged in for months...0

Hi all
Unfortunately I have also been a victim of this nationwide, huge scam.
Yesterday I was reading my hotmails in my lunch hour, and in between reading emails a new message popped up, "Confirmation of order on play.com".
I hadn't made an order for about a week and immediately panicked. I logged onto Play and literally seconds before, 4 orders were made for £39.99 each, for Xbox 360 games... total £160.
As the order had only just been placed, I was able to cancel them immediately as the payment had not yet processed on my credit card.
Phew.
I changed my password right away, and had a look at the other details on my account. The fraudster had added their delivery address, nicknamed "Friend" (the cheek)!!!!
The delivery name and address is as follows:
Vicky Wallace
25 Setchell Way
London
SE1 5XR
I cancelled all my cards as I was not sure if this was a complete breach of all my personal details or just play.com. Obviously I now realise that it's a Play issue after reading this thread!!
I rang Play this morning and explained what had happened. They have now cancelled my account with immediate effect and reported the Fraud to their security team. If I want to order with them again I need to register again. I won't be using them again though.
I don't think it's an issue with their password reminders specifically, because the fraudster in my case did not request the reminder email, they just logged in with my normal password no problem.
I hope this does get reported to Watchdog, I am shocked that such a large company has this situation occurring so often yet don't seem to be doing anything about it.
I don't agree with companies that save your cards on file and don't give you the option of inputting details each time. It clearly causes problems like this, so why don't they just save their customers the hassle of reclaiming stolen money back?? It only takes 2 seconds to input your numbers each time, I doubt Play would lose custom over it!! They'd surely lose less customers than they're doing with this fraud anyway it seems.... they're also losing money from sending out thousands of pounds of goods to bogus delivery addresses.
Hmph, rant over!0 -
forget watchdog, we have one of the top consumer journalist right here come on Martin do something about it and expose play.com if anyone can he should be able to0

Just registered to add what happened to me. I woke up to find someone had ordered £114 worth of stuff to an address in Camberwell (Philip Morrison). Luckily I called early the next morning and the woman cancelled the order, told me to call my bank(had already temporarily blocked my card) to get a new card. I do feel I was misled by Play as I got my new card only to be told I needed to get my refund through my bank and not Play.
Still have no refund from my bank and slightly concerned I won't get one because it was a debit card and the bank's attitude seemed to be "You've used Play before"0 -

That will be Rob who keeps the warehouse nice and tidyI am shocked that such a large company has this situation occurring so often yet don't seem to be doing anything about it..
It's because Play still get their money. It's the Banks that loose the money.0 -

TBH that is a bit of a daft thing to say. I work in retail and on occasion my company will receive chargebacks.
Even if the bank/card companies do refund customers who have been a victim of fraud on Play, they will always go and take that money straight back from Play.com.
So the banks are not losing out at all.0 -

Write to or email your bank. If need be, quote from sublime45's excellent post above (post 229).
It would appear, as suspected, that they are legally obliged to look into it for you. Explain the situation clearly and concisely and politely request that they issue a charge back to Play.com.0 -

I found the information from Internet: "Who pays for credit card fraud? In the U.S.A. the short answer is the merchant; in other countries it is the card issuer (a lot of the cards are issued by the Banks).
I also thought that the customer must request that a chargeback be made.
They are getting away with it because the cost of investigating a fraud is usually higher than the cost of just writing it off.0
