Thanks, Martin. Based on yours and Grumbler's above, I will most likely have another go at setting up a full payment DD next month

As an Amex Platinum and Egg customer for a few years, I was just getting round to cancelling my Amex card - partly because they have gradually increased the qualifying spend for the higher cashback rates, but mostly because I am very nervous about having a card that does not get paid off in full by DD every month (I tried doing this by phone and failed)

This is when I decided to do a bit of research on cashback cards and found this excellent web site - and this great thread!

So how successful were other people's attempts to set up a pay-in-full DD on Amax Plat?

Apologies if this has all been answered before, but I am brand new to this thread and there are now 20 pages of posts to search (I promise to try the search facility next...) :A

In 20 odd years I have only ever had one problem with Amex- I changed bank and they got my account number wrong by 1 digit....DD was not paid!!!
They chased me - I complained- they gave me a BIG sorry and wiped any charges and covered the cost of my phone call. I cant say fairer than that. I like Amex, and I spend a good few £ on it (work & personal). I have just changed from BA Amex to Platinum cashback. I will spend the cashback on my 4x4 ....and not take those BA free flights....saving the planet & all that:D

Amex have never caused me a problem - but I just know that one day I'm going to absent-mindedly miss a payment and wipe out all my cashback. That's why I want to set up a DD for my full balance.

I took the card out in December and all payments have been fine. you can do it all online as well so its easy to double check that it will all be paid. Also ask them to confirm the DD has been setup to pay off the FULL amount each month. This will save any hassle if you have an issue (but I'm sure you wont have).

100%. It was a long time ago, but I'm sure I just called them and told them I wanted to pay in full by DD each month. They took the bank details and sent me written confirmation. No problems.

EDIT: That reminds me, I also told them what date I wanted the DD to come out and they changed my statement date to match so that it all runs smoothly, so direct debit day is a couple of days after pay day and payment date is one week later.

It's also very clear from your statement if you are paying in full with direct debit as the statement tells you the direct debit date and the full amount gets filled into the direct debit amount box at the top of the statement.

This is a recent change to the statement layout but it was also clear before as the full direct debit amount used to be filled in the minimum payment box.

I set it up all OK -- I think [it's a long time ago, now!] I did it via the posted printed form with "Full Amount" written on it and everything was tickety-boo, full amount was duly taken each month. However, I'm not now using my Amex since they moved the goalposts regarding the cashback...

I thought the T&C's were OK - not limited (unlike Morgan Stanley) and 3% for the first 3 months.

You may be better cancelling it and improving your credit score - or going for the likes of an Egg card perhaps?

Thanks -- I'm keeping my Amex, for the time being anyway, in case they move the goalposts again more favourably in the future! My Cap1 Circle card is still paying me 1% at the moment so I'm using that pretty much exclusively - except that I'm presently spending the 200 quid free cash that I have had credited on my Egg Money card [already got it!].

  • Did you know that Alliance & Leicester are offering a MASSIVE 10% cashback on the first year's purchases on their visa card (taken out with their internet Premier Current Account which also pays 6.1% interest on balances up to £2500.00)

    Go for it!
