ive read the article, followed the flow-chart, got to cashback/reward cards.
right all this tiered cashback sytem really has me confused, i was confused by the whole article (one minute it said tescos card was good (£2 for every £100), the next it was bad???(they halved the points you get))
Yip - Tesco reduced the 'rewards' for new customers back at the start of 2006. Existing customers still get a good 'return' so to speak.
Its all a difficult area. Cashback is good as you can use cash anywhere! I have a Thomas Cook CC - I use it to reduce holiday costs and this if fine for me - but not for everyone. I had a Goldfish card...but they downgraded the 'rewards' so that they were worth around 0.66% (vs TC @1.5%).
The CC marketplace does appear to be in a state of flux @ the moment....perhaps 2007 will see some fresh offers from the providers???I am NOT a Woman! - its Overland Landy (as in A Landrover that travels Overland)

Hi, I was thinking about getting the Morgan Stanley Platinum card, and linking it to a direct debit to pay it off every month, as per the article. I was wondering what the chances of being rejected for it were? My mum sees to think there's no chance they won't give me one, but I'm not sure about it. I'm a graduate, so I have been known to use an overdraft in the past few years if that's an issue (though I currently actually have money). And I used to own a barclaycard because I got free book tokens for using it once, but I never missed a payment and only actually used it about twice, before I cancelled it.
GENERAL APPLICATION FORM QUESTIONS: I was looking at the application form, which has gross income on there. For that, can I just times my contracted hours by my hourly rate, or do I have to go back over the past 12 months and look how much I've earned? And the other one I was wondering, was that it asks me when I opened my bank account. Would this be when I opened my student account, or when I switched it to a graduate account (I assume the first one, since my account number etc has remained the same throughout this time). And finally, when telling them my previous address, do I include my student accomodation, since this is recorded on my bank account (again, I assume yes, but it's nice to check). And I might not have told them I had changed my address until a bit into the term, whereas when I'm applying for the credit card, I assume they'll want the date I move in. And I certainly wasn't on the electoral register at my uni address. Will any of this be an issue?0 -
Have been thoroughly disapointed with Amex Plat card.
I have spent over 13000 and recieved £147 in cash back.
New reduced pay out not worth bothering with.
Just go 0% and put your cash in a good savings account!0 -
Why not have The Conran Card. 1% cashback without upper limit.
Not many cards offer this.
Or i24card from Morgan Stanley (https://www.i24card.co.uk)0 -

Spent £13000 on the i24 and you get £130 back. Then you have to pay a £275 annual fee.0 -

I'll have your £147 if your not bothered!:D
I just got my Amex Platinum today and as I'm not allowed to fly for a while I have ditched my Amex/BA miles card. (plus BA are selling off a lot of their routes to BM).
As my Thomas Cook card has been downgraded to MBNA points (.33% equiv cashback) I'm also looking for a second (non Amex) card - the best still appears to be the Conran Card (Egg Money looks like you now need to pre-load it....whats all that about?...or am I just being stupid?)
Are there any other good options that I (or Martin for that matter) has missed... as Credit Cards appear to be a continually moving feast, and one that is moving faster than usual at the moment!
Are the days of FEE FREE (let alone Cashback) cards coming to an end?I am NOT a Woman! - its Overland Landy (as in A Landrover that travels Overland)

The best card to have is still the Conran Card (1% Cashback). No upper limit to how much you can earn.
I think free cards will still be around in basic form (without any other rewards).
If you need any rewards or extras such is travel insurance etc. I think most cards will have some kind of fee. However I cannot see anything wrong with this as long as you are getting more than what you are paying. Nothing is free in this life.
The fee will also stop to some people keep changing cards around for 0% intrest. This will also make cards cheaper to have for all others.0 -
please can you give me a link for the Conran card?Wombling £457.410
