I think that would depend on the item and its value to the person collecting.
Clearly if the item is very small and worth little, it is not worth the time and petrol to travel far, but for items like TV,s beds, washing machines, lawnmowers etc I am sure people will be prepared to travel.
Remember also that if you are 30 miles from the nearest group, then so are all your neighbours and a lot of people in-between and that therefore many people will be much closer to you.
You could also start a local group - looks fairly easy to me.
Good luck !To infinity and beyond!0 -
Hi Martin 14th...I gave away (to the local freecycle) a multi-exerciser, sort of stationary bike, come cross ski thingy, the bloke who came barely thanked me and I saw it in the local paper a fornight later for £50.Could have been an identical one , so can't complain, I got shut of it quickly, but feel I was conned.
Nowadays, what I can't sell, I take down to the council recycling centre.0 -
Freecycle has been brilliant for me. Got rid of loads of stuff that I would usually have to pay to dispose of, including tyres with legal tread on, of no use to me, but someone else could put on their car. It has also netted me 2 17" monitors, a very well built wardrobe, toaster - allsorts of use really.
Of course with it being local, there's little or no hassle with collecting stuff. and people collect from you usually, but as is its all for a good cause I will deliver stuff if its on my commute to and from work.
On the yahoo groups homepage, there's a link on the left hand side called "messages" - On that you can navigate over older posts.Money saving:
Buy a Skoda. Laugh at the VWs who paid several grand more
Its a diesel. 50mpg - laugh at all the petrols
Its a tuned 260bhp diesel - laugh at them in the rearview mirror as they vanish

I've got a lot of stuff from Freecycle and I've also given a lot away on it.
There will always be a few people who abuse any system like this, but most are OK.

read this post about freecycle this morning - joined - then posted 1 item I was no longer using and got a email a short while later and it is being collected next week by someone from about 50 miles away. Brilliant. :T0

I've had some great freecycle experiences too - but then it helps that my group has nearly 3000 members!0

Thanks for this. With a user name like mine makes sense.
BUT .... my local site has threads dating back to 2004. Mmmmmm not sure about it.
I will keep looking. I am a terrible hoarder, known loacally as 'skip rat', but there's always someone coming to me asking have you got this or that, and being the helpful person I am (yes I am!), will search my overcrowded garage! Seems like a good idea if the site's kept up to date.:grouphug: A smile, a 'please' and a 'thank you' cost nothing0 -

Nice to know things are getting used again for as long as poss instead of just been thrown away.

i'm a co-moderator on the Freecycle Edinburgh group and i can definately vouch for how great it is. The Edinburgh group currently has 3085 members and there is always loads of great things going
i got a sewing machine that i desperately wanted simply for asking (after I'd offered quite a few things mind) also got our 2nd filing cabinet from them, videos, loads of books all kinds of useful stuff.
i'm doing a major major change in our flat, changing around rooms (in strange but space saving ways) so that we can manage to keep ourselves crammed in here for another 9 months or so. so while doing this i've also done a huge clear out. i also cleaned out our frightening black hole of a hall cupboard and next week i'll be inviting any freecyclers from our area to pop by and browse through all the stuff we have so far (about 6 crt tv sized boxes so far  ) whatevers left will go to charity or get offered up on fguk's for postage only group... bet it get used than get thrown away
for anyone that hasn't signed up with freecycle yet i strongly encourage you to do so. one word of advice though, be prepared for a LOT of email if you have a big group
normally with yahoo groups (including my own groups) i only visit them via the web but with freecycle i have the emails sent straight to my email because the items tend to be spoken for very quickly. If you check the website frequently that's probably the fastest but i never remember to check it, however i work from home so i get the emails in a reasonable time and get about half the items i ask for so that's not too badfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
Clowance wrote:I am going to ask a stupid question: Have just joined my local freecycle group and confirmed. Is there a message board like this one you can look at or is it the sort that only send emails when someone posts? If so, how do you look at past posts? Cant find my way around it very well.
our group is a yahoo group (probably varies from group to group) so you CAN look at it via the website or you can have it sent to your email addressfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
