As I am aware and have been using freecycle for 3-4 weeks now I have never paid nor charged for stuff, If this is happening it goes against the whole ethos of the site.

I now have more PCs and Monitors than I can shake a stick at..

All free and going to a local charity..
  • I went on our local freecycle sometimes last year - and I was abused by someone when I asked for some things for our local animal rescue centre, so I don't go on it much at all now. However I did get a wonderful bedroom suite from a lovely man who was getting some new stuff - it was 20 years old and in absolute pristine condition. We were desperate for a new suite - and it made our day. So it does work really well sometimes :) There are some adorable people out there :)

I've also given loads of little things away too - tickets I'd won to an event that I really couldn't go to because of my father in law suddenly being taken ill, and other little bits that I could send by post. :)
Everyone has a photographic memory, it's just some of them don't have film.

Freecycle London is huge which can be a problem. You absolutely have to set up some decent mail filtering or else you will spend all day sifting through the stuff. I've been a member for about 18months and found it great. I have had major items like colour laser printer and boxed set of Sherlock Holmes DVDs, and smaller items like plastic kids' chairs, part used pots of paint, used jiffy bags etc. I have also got rid of loads of stuff this way: phone, fax machine, kids' stuff, even an old US Postal Service mail bag (what DID they want it for!)

OK so sometimes people "abuse" the system by collecting and then selling on. But actually the whole purpose of freecycle is to prevent stuff going into landfill. If people offering stuff thought it was worth something and had the time or inclination to do so then they could try to sell it themselves. If they just want shot of the stuff, then offer it of freecycle and hopefully it will go.

One problem for many is people saying they want something and then not turning up. I've still got a fax machine I have been trying to dispose of (with a minor mechanical fault) that two people said they wanted and then never turned up for. So you have to take that into account in any arrangements you make.

On the whole it is great; I just wish they would go ahead and split the London group. Having 20000+ members may be good in some ways, but it kind of makes it unmanageable.

I wish I hadn't got rid of my van, now. Sounds like a nice little earner, collected unwanted stuff, and selling it in a Boot Sale.
Could even re-recycle the stuff that was no good ,put it back into the system, as it were.
I have a niece and her husband who buy small postable items from any where for, say 10-20p and sell 'em on E-Bay for £1 plus postage.40 parcels a day they take up to the post office.. They should be on 'How to pay off your Mortgage in Two Years'.

I've just joined the London group.

Hope it works because I want to get rid of an old computer that's gathering dust. Everyone else I tried wanted me to pay to have it collected. In one day I've had 3 responses; just hope they turn up now.

I've set up a yahoo account just for freecycle that I'm not even linking to outlook - 300 emails in one day.

I bet you'll get rid of it easily. Even non-working computing equipment seems to go quite easily for parts.

If you don't get a definite collection in a few days, repost, because the items quickly disappear down the list and new people are joining every day.

  • I am in the process of starting North Somerset Freecycle. Caught in between Bristol and Somerset, it can be a long drive to pick up an item. Rather than wait for somebody else to do it-I've started the group myself. Its running at the moment but has not had official approval so I wont give out the details. If anyone is interested though, please PM me with your email addy and when it is Official with Freecycle I will send you the details.
If you are commited to recycling and you have a little time to spare each week, please consider doing this yourself for your area if you don't have a local group.
