  • I'm a freecycler, I too think it's great.

I always make a point of emailing after I've picked up an item to thank them again.

The wanted posts are good in my opinion. I had an exercise bike I didn't want but never got round to listing it, then somebody posted wanting one, so I replied, it will act as a catalyst for some people. What bothers me is when people post asking for this that are relatively inexpensive, I just don't get it. Someone posted the other day asking for a 2006 diary?! I picked one of these up for 50p a couple of months ago. Surely it will cost more than 50p in petrol to go and collect it. I have only ever asked for things that I genuinely can't afford, and would never think of posting wanted ads for stuff as a matter of course.

What bothers me more is that one my freecycle group at least, people post again when the item has been collected saying that it's taken. Surely it would make more sense to just remove the original post, rather than having to trawl through to see if there's a taken message? Well I don't really know how these things work, just a thought.
    It's definitely not definately!

The Glasgow group works on a Yahoo mailing list - so I don't think it's possible to remove ads after they're posted. I like the idea of the TAKEN posting - it lets people know that it's gone and not to continually/obsessively post requesting it

I freecycled my first itme today - a laptop bag that's been sat under my desk for months - really pleased as it can be collected on my way home. What a great service.

I'm the Wrexham Freecycle Moderator. I welcome any and all comments form members. I am particularly interested if people have trouble with other members - rude emails, no-shows for collection, suspicion of dealing etc,. I have a notebook and keep a track of what people are up to - If I suspect something amiss I contact them. Thankfully this as only happened once! When I think people are genuine, I take them off moderation. I rarely give my items to the first responder - I usually draw names from a hat as it is fairer that way. I love the whole idea of Freecyle and love being a mod. I wouldn't dream of asking for an item unless it was first posted to all other members so they had a fair chance too.
As for the `taken' posts being a bit of a pain - you have to remember a lot (probably most) people don't read on the web but read straight from their inbox. If a message is sent as soon as its posted, even if its deleted from the website this won't delete the message from the inboxes of those who have already recieved it.

I am also considering a swap/barter site for seeds, plants, produce etc that local Freecyclers produce. I'm planning a poll to see what members think.

I am a freecycler and think it's a great idea for getting and giving items of low-value (to give) but high- value & usefulness (to receive) IYKWIM.

I have received 4 black binliners of plant pots/seed trays recently that the owners were delighted to be shot of. For the price of a bit of petrol and a bit of elbow grease to clean them, I now have the equivalent of hundreds of pounds worth of plant pots that would otherwise have been land-fill.

I have given away packing boxes and clothes hangers that cost me nothing as I collected them with clothes/goods etc, but would have cost the freecyclers I gave them to a fortune to buy new.

    A fantastic site IMHO

Belfast group works on the same principal. I have offered stuff before, but so far no luck getting anything :)

What a great first experience. Met my first recycler at my home tube station and all really easy. I was shocked by the amount of interest in the item and it stopped it going into the landfill. Excellent.
