Belfast group works on the same principal. I have offered stuff before, but so far no luck getting anything :)

If you need something post a WANTED ad. I've seen someone offer an item and it's then followed by a few wanted ads requesting the same item.

Freecycle's also good for trend spotting - there's definately been an upsurge in knitting and sewing in Glasgow

Sorry to be dim but when I click on my local group it just brings up a blank email - do I just send this off? Or do I need to write anything on it?

Help! I'd really like to join. I'm sure I'm just missing some link somewhere.....

I belong to the freecycle london group - wanted to get rid of kitchen stuff such as kettle, ironing board and a fridge freezer. Most were really polite but I did have a few responding to the offered ad saying: "pls address, will collect" for all the items - personally I thought that was a bit cheeky and rude so I ended up giving everything except the fridge freezer to different individuals. I had a no show on the ff so called the council instead who will give it to someone who could use it in the area.

I belong to four local groups and not all of them moderate the messages. I think it is down to each group. The biggest group I belong to doesn't have time, but on the smaller groups the moderators check each message and sometimes edit the titles to make it clearer what is being offered and from which location etc.

I think the whole thing is great though, like an earlier poster, I have been surprised by the lack of pleases and thankyous in some posts!!!

Maybe that's a sign of my old age!!!!

Look for more local sites, I am a member of Southport, Chorley and Wigan freecycle, ST Helens has one too, various Liverpool ones. Yahoo groups should tell you who is out there...got rid of books that didn't sell at the car boot..Looking to de-clutter.

I've used Freecycle a few times to give and receive although I am not impressed. I gave away some computer books, got flooded with emails within 1 hour, offered it to the first person who didn't even turn up at the agreed time or mail me afterwards to say sorry!

I have also attempted to get some curtains. About 5 times I have seen postings but they all go within 5 minutes. It's like there's a leech infestation and unless you jump on the offer literally the minute it's posted you won't get it!
  • I freecycle in Coventry!!
  • I'm in the Birmingham and (new) Solihull groups. I agree that you usually have to be quick to get the best stuff, and I've used that approach a few times too, but now I've started to give everyone a day or two to respond and then pick the ones that seem to be most deserving (and/or polite). The Birmingham group has started a "two strikes and you're out" policy for no-shows - if someone fails to turn up and doesn't bother to contact you to explain why then you can report them to the moderators and if it happens again they'll be banned from the group.

Another thing that's worth considering is whether you mind your things going to someone who's just going to sell them on. In the B'ham group all dealers are supposed to state their interest but I'm sure that a lot of them don't.

I've got some really good stuff from Freecycle - including, today, a whole travel system (pushchair, carry/car seat and carrycot) for the baby I'm expecting in August. The seat is a little worn, but the kit would cost around £300 new so I'm not complaining at all!!! I wasn't the first to respond to the offer, but the donor was unable to get hold of the person who was first so I got second dibs.
