After reading this I decided to have my first look at freecycle. Had to register first to gain access to message boards, which I didn't mind doing. I found the whole layout quite confusing though.
Things seem to go very quickly - several items that were posted this morning were taken within a couple of hours, so there must be a fair few people using the site.
I suppose I shouldn't have been shocked to see that there was concern over some people taking all they could get their handes on to sell at boot sales etc., but it does make you wonder about the morals of some people.
As Peakma says - it is up to the giver who they give to.
The Freecycle organisation has one goal - to reduce landfill and the associated waste (including cost of re-manufacturing things thrown away). As such it does not mind people re-selling items - so long as it is keeping it out of landfill.

Most of us though would prefer to give to a needy cause.
    To infinity and beyond!
  • Hi there fellow Freecyclers! I've been a member of the thriving Gloucestershire group for almost a year now, it's superb. I'm more into the getting rid of than the getting, but I understand that you do have to be quick if you want something (and polite and friendly in your emails, that always helps!). I've had no trouble getting rid of all sorts of things that otherwise I would have had to take to the tip (and being very green, I don't like sending things to landfill).

We do have a few nutters posting wants for cars, dishwashers, beds and the like, but most people get the spirit of the thing.

    Have a good day!

    Hello fellow freecyclers :hello:

I am part of the London group and have met some really lovely, genuine people via freecycle. There is also a freecycle cafe for discussion and the offering of tickets or vouchers etc as a lot of Admin post end up on the main boards and it sometimes gets a bit clogged up!

I recently Freecycled a load of O2 SIMs. I was sick of the things, as I wasn't using them (don't know why I bothered to apply for so many!). I got one call from a lady who runs a charity and was happy to give away some to her. There were some people taking the mick by asking me to post them one - I politely asked them for an SAE first ;)

    Freecycle is cool!:T

Signed up with Warrington, Manchester, Liverpool, but mainly had success with the Warrington group.

I do not have any problem with the wanted ads
(if you don't ask, you don't get!).

It's all about give and take. :D
... and this is the world that we are leaving for all our children.

I gave someone a dishwasher yesterday!
It's better than having it in the front yard or paying the ocuncil to take it away.
Mind you i listed multiple items which were all quite different and the forst messages i got through were 'can i have the lot please' I felt like saying 'no' quite frankly. The chances of them NEEDING all those items was remote. Cant help thinking they will end up in a car boot sale somewhere  ah well at least i have more space in my house now eh!

have gotten plenty of things i wanted but couldnt have otherwise afforded....the best few being a sewing machine,37 dressmaking patterns and an almost new double buggy with raincover.
i have also given away things i no longer needed such as our old fridge freezer and selected baby items.

I have only ever given away things on Freecycle as I don't have a car so couldn't collect stuff from other people. Do you think it would be appropriate to ask if people could deliver if I paid their petrol money?
