  • Are their any clubs/organisations that negotiate discounts for over 60's.
I know a few companies do them but I'd like to know if I can see all my options in the one place?

Someone earlier mentioned certain councils offering free swimming in their pools for the over 60s.

I seem to recall there was a government announcement last summer that, somewhat loosely linked to our future hosting of the Olympics and raising health awareness, free swimming would be made available to the over 60s throughout England.

Does anyone know if this is still going ahead, and if so, whether it is obligatory or discretionary for councils to offer this?

From the 1st April 2009 all Leisure Centres will have free swimming for over 60's. You need to rind and ask for an application form which I think, when you've returned it, then results in your being sent a swipe card.
I know it's accurate about the free swimming as I have very recently enquired at our nearest Leisure Centres.

Hi wicken and thanks for the reply. Since posing my question, I've done a bit of googling myself and found some government information on the subject. Seems it's not quite so black and white.

Councils have been invited by the government to opt into the scheme, it's not obligatory. If they do choose to opt in (deadline was 15 Sept 2008), they will be offered a 'pot' of money to finance the concession, the amount of money being based on their population of certain age groups. They can opt for Pot 1 only, to offer free swimming to the over 60s. They can also opt in to a second Pot if they also intend to offer free swimming to under 16s.

I was only interested in the over 60s, and apparently 82% of all local authorities, some 292 of them, have taken up the offer of Pot 1 to fund free swimming for the over 60s. So it's all down to luck as to whether you live in one of those 292 authorities and so benefit from the scheme.

All I can say is, shame on those authorities who aren't taking part, although I suppose if you are a council without a swimming pool, there's not much you can do. :o

Hairdressers in most areas offer discounts.

Concession rates for most football grounds, in fact most sporting events, concerts and exhibitions. If you are accompanying him make sure he buys both tickets, most places charge the concession price for both tickets.

B+Q and some other stores have a 10% discount card.

Tradesmen in local papers frequently put something in their ads like "special rates for senior citizens" This usually means that they inflate by 15% so they give you a discount of 15% Get a younger member of the family to be at home to get the quote and then you appear and tell them it's your house and what is that price after the discount
  • Hi,

I came across this offer for the over 55's quite by chance, when arranging a trip to France. Mercure Hotels offer a double room for the price of a single room for silver savers. It won't save you a fortune, but will leave enough to contribute towards lunch.
BTW, you can get 2 breakfasts if you pay for 1 with the same deal. You may find cheaper breakfasts nearby, but it may be just what you want.

Go to the mercure website and click on special offers in france.

    Enjoy!
