    I'm so sorry.

The police were very helpful when my cat was shot. Please make sure you call them and get help from them. You also need a crime reference number so you don't get fobbed off.

You have evidence, sadly, that this crime took place, so the police need to deal with it.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

Yes, as fc says, who was the witness? If there are two small groups of builders - to be honest, craftmen arent likely to be using a spade. If you think of perhaps 1 labourer to two craftsmen on a site. So you can narrow it down to labourers most likely. I cant believe none of the other men wouldnt also let you know, even if in private, who the guy is. My husband is a builder - if anyone on a site did this, I am sure he and other guys would sort it (him) out.

At least the building company manager sounds like he'll be helpful, and if it's a small site that will narrow down who it could be. I know it won't bring your cat back, but I really hope you get this person brought to justice.

I'm so sorry. In my case 1 other witness who then 'didn't want to get involved' (sorry I can't abide that attitude) so it was my word against the chaps. The police not at all interested (they went through the motions). My OH very media savvy so got some local interest (I'm very private). The final insult was having to pay to have my little cat put down, as the vet had no option. This was all 6 years ago, it still hurts, I understand how you are feeling. Please don't think I am being crass, but would you consider re-homing another little chap/chapess? You are obviously a cat lover - and a little homeless person may help you too? It won't stop it hurting - but it may be a start? If you want to go down the media route please feel free to pm me.

I've just read this & my heart goes out to you, Op. It's beyond belief that people could even think of doing this let alone to actually do it. Have you contacted the Police at all? Did the RSPCA have any luck in finding out who did it? I really hope this scum is caught & is treated so severely he never even thinks of harming an animal again. RIP Kitty x

I have just talked about this post with an ex RSPCA inspector and they have said that the police are definately the way to go.

I am with the OP 100% and think this man is scum but... legally if the cat was killed instantly then there was no suffering so even if the RSPCA got it to court there would unlikely to be a severe penalty. Police have the options of 'criminal damage' etc to pursue which given the circumstances of the case and the effect on the OP as the victim are likely to result in a more serious sentence if it gets to court

I think using the local press to shame the building firm into sacking him over this is the way to go.
Sad as it is, I think that would be more of a punishment than anything our justice system is likely to impose.
