I like it - several Tesco staff here with voices of reason. I imagine that 'someone' at HO will also read the posts in here, which explains why some SEL's get changed quickly rather than on a store by store basis.

Just a pity that they don't take note of the comments about surly CS staff and exceptions to the rule(s) - perhaps a store-wide policy is called for on R&R in cases where an offer has ended but the SEL was not removed or changed?

Personally I'm not bothered if a few people take advantage of multiple purchases, knowing full well that they will be going for R&R. If they can live with it then that's up to them. I've never had a R&R from Tesco, only once did I query a price and was given the difference, long before I started looking here of course. I've had the odd case where two of one item were shown on the receipt and got a refund on the mis-scan.

I started in retail in the days before barcode tills, store staff had to KNOW the cost of loads of items as they were not priced, daily items like bread, sugar, milk and so on. All staff were told when a price was changed and occasionally 'remote pilot' mode would kick in and the customer got charged the old (usually lower) price without anyone realising. In those days the chain I worked for (does not take much to work out which that was) had a pricing book with nice green pages, on the right hand side of each listing were three columns, in most cases two of these had been blanked out (by someone sticking a bit of paper over before photocopying, no nice PC's either!) so we could only see one price, the one we had to charge.

Some pages didn't have the blanking out, so we could see that lower banded stores were charging higher prices. That still happens with the Extra, Normal and Metro levels as I know I've paid different prices at the various size of store. However, I have noted that bigger promotions, usually the ones with aisle end stacks, are standard and the lower price then applies in a Metro as well.

With all the technology in place the tills should never be wrong, it's the SEL's that are the key to R&R - being put out manually. A section manager gets a batchs of new tickets and passes them to one of the guys actually out there to go and change them, they get part way through and then it's their break, they put the tickets down and someone else moves them (I've even seen kids taking them) so the SEL may not get updated - they're hardly likely to go back to their immediate boss and tell them they left them out on the shop floor during a break are they!
Oh for the days when most things had a price label on the packet/tin and we'd spend a happy Monday morning with a baby food tin in one hand and a pile of stock to the side, using the tin edge to scrape off the old label so a new price could be applied! It was not acceptable then to put a second label over the top of an existing one, even when the price went down.

Was it all green fields as well? :D

I honestly do not believe anyone is "officially" trawling through internet forums for missprice information. There are far easier ways to get more accurate information. The problem is in dealing with issues outside of normal routines - the human element.

I have had my share of surly CS staff. I have also had my share of surly customers. Real problems seem to kick off when you get one of each ;)

In general, Extra's and Superstores will charge the same. As will the majority of Metro's. Express stores and Metro's in inner-city locations have a different pricing structure, in consideration of their higher running costs. Tesco, unlike another chain whos name escapes me, do not price regionally.

My understanding of r & r is that it was brought in when Tesco moved from individual price tickets to barcode scanning, to give confidence in the fact that each can of beans would no longer have its own little sticker. Does that sound right to you Hillards?

    I am not sure
  • I think i'm just having a blonde moment here but can someone tell me what R&R means?

Interesting. Perhaps there is a case against the DDA if Tesco really expects people to read all the small print here.

However, the intention of the law is that shoppers should not be expected to read all the small print of POS material as they walk around a supermarket. Offers should be clearly defined and easy to understand as you walk around without having to make people stop to study the terms of the offer. It's an invitation to treat, not an invitation to make notes.

Exactly what I was pointing out. I have been told on odd occasions, didnt you read the expiry date on the sign. So if it is for customer info why not make it readable in a large font.

Not sure if this is a misprice or not as to be honest I still havent got my head round the way the meats work out!!

In my local store yesterday I saw a Tesco Finest rolled lamb joint the SEL said £7.99kg but on the label it said £12.99kg with a item price of about a fiver.

Am I to assume that if it went through the till at the total price on the pack (about a fiver), then it is a misprice as the price is worked out on £12.99kg?

If so - here's a misprice - fill your trollies - if not - sorry folks!

If all the labels and item numbers tie together correctly then this is definitely a misprice. You don't need to scan variable weight meat packs to check as it will be wrong if the SEL is lower than the pack label. That's why they need to be covered with the yellow reduction labels!

The simple answer is once an offer has expired they should remove the sel or pos material.

just to try and put an end to the dates debacle.

The dates are there for customer information as many customers were asking when offers would run until.

The dates are not there as a get out clause for the r&r policy, the fact of the matter is that the labels should be removed as soon as the promotion expires thus eliminating the potential excuse that is used occasionally. There is no discrimination against anyone, the writing is in a smaller size as space on an SEL is limited.

    1) Stores can change the price on items, this is a highly controlled process that is checked and signed off daily.

    2) Stores can print talkers locally, however they are linked to the same system that produces the labels. There are a limited number of stores that have the ability to make talkers independantly of any system but this is generally some of the larger extra stores. The different fonts I cannot account for as the independant system is still running software that prints to the corporate style.

The printer you mention which is independent of the SEL system is the A1 printer. Only PID staff have the key and as you say are restricted to Extra stores. Ours recieved one as pasrt of a refit recently.
