So, what you are saying is that there is no specific training regarding things like the Consumer Protection Act and the Price Marking Order but through correct use of this material, any failures to meet such legal obligations should be easily identifyable?

The case in point right now is this Pasta where the POS says £94p down to £0.62p "ALL VARIETIES" . However, there's one variety that's not reduced on the system and goes through at the full price. This is a contravention of the Consumer Protection Act and the Price Marking Order 2004 as the pricing is ambigious and the store refused to R&R.

What I think you are suggesting is that there are procedures in place to prevent this happening. Is this correct?

Can not comment on a store refusing an r & r, although it looks like it should be one to me.

You are talking about the shelf talker saying "all varieties" but one of them not being reduced in price. Should have been checked by the person putting on the POS and the person filling the shelf. The wording on the talker is not set at store level, so if it has now changed to named varieties that action has come from the office. That then relies on Price Integrity picking up on the ad hoc change, destroying the old pos and putting out the new.

The store would be able to do two quick fixes on spotting it (without waiting for intervention from above). They could simply remove the shelf talker, which would leave the shelf edge labels for each item correct. Or they could set the offending line up to the reduced price as a local promotion.

Any way you look at it, its more work (and more chance for something to be overlooked) simply because the promotion was not set up correctly in the first place. Similar thing happened with Finest bacon last week - talker said all varieties, one line was ommited, talker was later updated.

    Hope that answers your question?

Anyone know the price for Dig.logic 14" TV? There are two prices in my local store, £44.97 and £49.97.
Knowing my luck its bound to come up at the lower price

check the last two digits on the long code on the SEL's,

the lowest one is the older price

the highest number is the one you'll be charged
    money saving my @rse.
I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

Indeed it does answer the question. Many thanks for your time.

There are some other questions arising from this though. Perhaps you could enlighten us further?

    1) Stores have the ability to set up local promotions like this so that they can change the price of items? I was unaware of this but it makes sense. Presumably there are guidelines for doing this?

    2) I've seen a number of yellow POS promotions (I assume that the Tesco jargon for these is "talkers") recently that have been printed in different fonts and just seem to not follow style. I had assumed then that stores have the ability to print these locally. Can stores do this?

It would seem from your reply that a large number of mis-price faults are down to mistakes made above store level where POS is sent out that's wrong and then propogating the fault at store level by staff just not looking and saying "hey, that's wrong" and taking it to their boss.

    1) Stores can change the price on items, this is a highly controlled process that is checked and signed off daily.

    2) Stores can print talkers locally, however they are linked to the same system that produces the labels. There are a limited number of stores that have the ability to make talkers independantly of any system but this is generally some of the larger extra stores. The different fonts I cannot account for as the independant system is still running software that prints to the corporate style.

  • "Shelf talker" isn't Tesco jargon, it's industry jargon.

Is it just me, or generally, is there a lack of R&R at the moment except for meat?

I think there is so much going r&r on the meat at the moment that no one is looking for anything else.

    Spa2k answered perfectly :D

Would add that setting up local promotions also has an impact on Waste (as the money you knock off has to be accounted for somewhere) and no store is keen to add to its waste bill :o

And for question 2, (without trying to get too Jargony) the POS library on the back office system uses a slightly different font for some reason. (its the system that makes generic POS eg "This product may contain traces of nuts" etc)

The numbers on the bottom? I would normally have one in my pocket but today must have been a good day :D

The first 8 digit number is the TPN (Tesco product number) followed by a dash and a 4 digit number, which is the number of singles in a case.

The next after the slash is the EAN13 or barcode number of the product (so 5000183007426 is the Maryland cookies I am munching ;) ). You can use this to ensure the ticket you are looking at refers to the product you are holding.

Lastly, after another slash, is the revision number. This shows which is the most up to date SEL (shelf edge label) - if an item has two tickets out, the higher number is the current one.

    Don't think I missed anything....hope that helps.
