    Odd Fellow
The point is that the overcharge was pointed out to them on three separate occasions and they did nothing about it. Only when I reported it to Trading Standards did someone seem to take notice.

Out of interest what do T.S. do when when they are informed of Mr T's overcharges? Do they just have a friendly word...dont see many cases in court!!!

I really don't know. What I do know is that TS weren't terribly helpful to me when a store refused to refund 2 Xbox games that were overcharged. TS said that there was nothing they could do as they hadn't "witnessed" the overcharge. This, despite the fact that I had photographic evidence of posters saying "Under £30" and a reciept showing £32.97 AND the fact that Mr T wasn't disputing the fact that it was "misleading". I decided there and then that I wasn't going to let this store get away with it, so when my wife was in store and I at home, she called me and I directed her to the shelves where these Justin & Colin book were (I'd already had two of them from the same store) and they were still stickered at £6.97. I told her to get another one and I called TS whilst she was in store.

TS was interested in my knowledge of the overcharge before it had taken place so I told them that it was the third one we'd had (or was about to) and that given they'ed ignored it at least twice before, there seemed no reason to consider that they'd bother again. TS seemed amused, to say the least.

I have no knowlegde of what actually happened, but I do know that when I went in a day or so later, the books were priced correctly.

TS certainly has the power to fine stores that overcharge, but I feel that this is probably not too common. It's more likely that they fire a warning shot initially.

Incidentally, after a couple of weeks of letters to the store (all of which were copied to HO and none of which were answered by the store) I called HO about the debacle and complained bitterly about the lack of communication from the store and told them that if the situation wasn't resolved according to company policy, I would be taking the story to the newspapers. That made a difference and within 15 minutes, my long-overdue R&R was authorised.

Don't you think if it has been decided by Mr T that he is going to sell x product for a certain price but it is at a higher price on the system then the system should be corrected and not that the sel should be removed?? Whilst it may not be illegal it seems a little unfair if you purchase something at one store when you could buy it cheaper at anpther store less than a few miles away. If you know it's cheaper elsewhere then you have the choice to purchase it at the other store but what about those poor unsuspecting customers who pay the higher price not knowing it could be found cheaper in another tescos. Now i understand the customer chooses to pay that price when they pick it up of the shelf- but come on how many of us would pay a higher price if we had a choice- not many i'm sure.

Please explain to me why you believe that it is wrong to remove the SEL rather than change the system price? How do you KNOW it's cheaper elsewhere? To have established this, you must have looked or have been informed by somebody who has looked.

Tesco has a uniform pricing policy that should ensure that products are the same price in all stores. Unfortunately, this fails regularly and commonly on situations where stores have been lapse in replacing SELs or simply haven't been given updated SELs to put out.

However this dosen't remove the point which, as you clearly state, is customer choice. We all regularly buy things that we are unaware are on sale at a lower price less than half a mile away. How many times have you filled your tank with fuel, paid up and then within a few miles seen it for a penny less per litre? How is this any different to your "poor unsuspecting customers" scenario?

    Hi odd fellow,
it is wrong (i feel) because you could pop down the road at another Tesco`s and get it for 17.97 because they leave the SEL on showing it should be 17.97, even if customers get an r&r on it, this is obviously the price it should have been. Once the SEL was removed the customer could not even take it through at 19.97 and get a correction at the till to 17.97 the price it should be! the SEL was yellow, they were highlighting "fab offer , this dvd player for...) I know all about Tesco don`t have to sell it to you etc etc. The point is for a number of weeks it is being advertised at 17.97, unsuspecting customers taking it through till thinking they got a bargain pay 19.97 for it, then when highlighted they just remove SEL for 17.97 and sell it at the overcharge price of 19.97, now it is back to 17.97, maybe it is now going through the till correct, but it just proves that 17.97 is the price EVERYONE should have been buying it for. What happens in the case of interim prices on request then?? i work in retail, maybe it is different for supermarkets?

No, it's the price that it was, not the price that it should have been. It's a mistake and Tesco's either get away with it or pay the price by having to give the item away.

I simply can't agree. Your arguement is tantamount to saying that Tesco (or any other trader) cannot change the price that it sells something at (or at least, it can but only if it makes it cheaper).

What you are describing is sales and marketing. There's nothing wrong with a promotion that ends, the price goes up and then, a couple of weeks later the price comes down to what it was in the promo again, only now it's not a promotion.

It's the same with the Finest Sausages. For months and months, the price was £1.99 or buy 2 packs for £3.00. Now, the new promotion is save £0.39p (I think) per pack. It looks like a decent offer but isn't a patch on buying 2 for £3.00. They did this last year on the same product line and once the £0.39p promo ended, the old promo of 2 for £3.00 started again. Watch it this time. However, are you saying that you should still be able to buy 2 packs for £3.00? It's a very similar arguement.

Can you tell me if there is still a policy for anyone being undercharged at the till?
IE; Things being scanned at less than the SEL price showing?

When i worked at tesco many years ago
The customer was given a 'reward' of the product price back
if they pointed out an undercharge..
Does this still apply or has this policy been changed?

I queried that when I was undercharged. The CS lady told me that I was the one benefitting from being undercharged and that refunds were only given on overcharged items  ! She also said that the price may have been reduced and that the shelf price may not have been updated yet with the new sale price!

If you buy something at Tesco, and they charge you more than is marked on the product or on the shelf ticket (jargon: SEL = shelf edge label) then their policy is to return the money AND let you keep the goods.

The policy generally written up on boards near customer services, under the heading "and if things don't add up".

Staff will usually try and palm you off with excuses and try to give you the difference back but if you point this out, they should give in.

Just to add to this: Never point out a misprice whilst at the checkout, because the staff will simply put the item through at the lower price before you pay. You need to pay for the item and then go to the Customer Service desk with your receipt, and point out the misprice. Always stand your ground, point out that it is their policy and they should stick to it. Someone else will be able to explain this part to you better than I can, but I believe Trading Standards can actually fine Tesco's if they charge you a higher price than they are advertising on the SEL.
  • After lurking on this thread for a few months I finally did my first R&R today. The Lemon & Garlic Ready to Roast Chicken. Was feeling a bit nervous at what they'd say but the price was checked & within minutes I had my money back with a smile! :D

Well chuffed! Thanks to everyone for pointing out the misprices.
