Evening all,
Thanks for all the kind thoughts to-day about Luca...still expect him to come in to sit with me, but he is now safely tucked up with his friends Jess and Maxi, although they were dogs they all got on well together.
Mudgekin, sorry to hear your bad news, hopefully things will work out for you.
Taplady....take care of yourself.
PenPin...sorry that you are down, keep posting.
Snowy...haven't heard anything about a murder in the North, so presumably you have survived the day....would second the idea of keeping notes and relaying contents to agency.
Csarina...you are such a busy lady, hope that you get some result on OH's dizzies soon, very frustrating.
Weezl....glad to hear that you are safely off that ladder, not a place I have ever felt safe, certainly not in your present condition...maybe you are trying to hurry things on??
ISOM...enjoy your pancakes
Can't for the life of me remember who has a bad back, sorry, hugs to you, suffered for years until I had a manipulation by a spinologist, worked for me but depends on problem I think.
There was also a newbie I am sure....hello and welcome.
Hugs to all in need or want and thank you all for being my friends

attached is the photo of the starter which alas was a sacrifice as didnt have enough milk for pancakes and starter so the starter won...will have pancake another day! Its been "fed" with milk, sugar and flour so in total now 2 cups of each in the mix and keep having to remind myself to use a wooden spoon and nothing metal! Doesent look like much does it!! Quite gloopy but thankfully no stink yet!
Csarina was looking for the amish book people were talking about at the w/e..about a womans experience of living "plain".think you said you had it gathering dust?!!Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! Even in the darkest moments, love and hope are always possible.0 -

OH has been ok since his 'little rest' this morning........Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0 -
Ooh your starter looks good ISOM! Incidentally, when I mentioned my sister's starter the other day I wasn't talking about it smelling - it smells a tiny bit sour, like batter that's sat overnight, but not really. The reason she has trouble getting someone to look after it is that it has to be fed - you have to use some then add to it, and she didn't trust anyone to do it except me! You don't want to worry about keeping it for years, anyway, because it's too acid for any nasties. Hers was given to her by a neighbour whose hubby was in the USAF before they went back to the states.0

I was surprised that the batter doesent smell (because of the milk) and very much resembles panckake mix (guess it is but without the egg!) but gloopier! Being "fed" is relatively easy though and I have a weezl nearby if it needs babysitting!!Does it mature/get better with age? If not dont see why you couldnt just start with a new one again?Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! Even in the darkest moments, love and hope are always possible.0

I think they are supposed to improve with age - the wild yeast and lacto-wassitcalleds that give the bread its flavour get to develop. But I also think it's got a lot to do with tradition, as they were bought to the USA by the first wave of Eastern European immigrants and they were a little bit of 'home'. Some people still refer to the starter as the mother dough.
Have you ever read the Laurie Colwin Home Cooking books? There's a whole chapter about it in one of them. I might have to scootle off and dig my copies out. If you've never heard of these books I highly recommend them BTW.0 -
oh nooooo not another book recc...!!! Will see if its libryable perhaps? What they about - just recipes or the history of food etc?Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! Even in the darkest moments, love and hope are always possible.0

Neither. There's some recipes in them, but mainly they're just essays, kind of, lots of anecdotes and general foodiness! She was American but she was a big fan of British food, I think she died before the second one came out. I really can't explain what they're like.
Anyway, they were never published in the UK I don't think, so I'm not sure if libraries will have copies. They're on Amazon marketplace, the first one is quite cheap, the sequel less so:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Home-Cooking-Kitchen-Laurie-Colwin/dp/0060955309/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1235510199&sr=8-1 and http://www.amazon.co.uk/More-Home-Cooking-Returns-Kitchen/dp/0060955317/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b
If you like I can lend them to you, but it'll have to wait a little while 'cos I'm skint for postage right now (blimming car tax is due)
