OK, as you seem to leave your PC online all night we can assume that Avast is up to date. But to be sure run a manual scan with it.
Yes your router will have a hardware firewall. You also have a software firewall built into XP, go Control Panel>Security Centre and make sure it's switched on though. You should have 3 green lights there-firewall, automatic updates and virus protection.
The answers to your malware question have already been posted in your other thread here:

Download the free software advised by the replies there and follow the instructions given.

yup .three green lights so all ok

with my avast how do l do a manual scan if l go back into it will it give me that option , ie where it does auto updates, do l change that to manual run it thrn change bk to auto ??

    go to this site http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&!!!!!button

download and install, then update it. then run a full scan. this will find and remove any nasties free.

routers do have firewalls, and avast will need to update every day to catch new viruses

    what am l like !!!
    thanks will do it now

Avast: open the program control centre and it should give you the option of running something like 'scan my computer'. This is nothing to do with the antivirus updating process which you've already said is set to 3am automatic updates. What you're doing here is using the program to scan your computer to check for any viruses. You can run the updater manually if you wish before you do this (good idea) but that will not change it from updating automatically at night.
However you should maybe change the auto update time from 3am to sometime in the evening or day when you will be online. It's pointless leaving your PC on all night as it just increases your vulnerability to spyware infection.

I hope you haven't installed malware-the idea was to remove it...
When you repost please can you confirm which anti-malware program(s) you have now installed and run? You were advised to use Superantispyware and AntiMalwareBytes.
Yes, please post HijackThis log so others can advise if any infections remain. Don't remove anything found in HJT log, just post and wait for advice.

Don't worry. But in future make a note of the name of anything you delete, as this may help. Download and run Hijack This, then post the log it produces. Someone on here will then look at it and advise.
Also download and run Superantispyware and see if that finds anything.
The reason you need to use more than one anti-malware program is that some pick up one problem and another picks up something else. Between them they should catch most things.
Did you update your antivirus and do a scan with that as well?
Come back and report when you have done all this.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
