we have the tinned tomatoes - all tastes the same once its made into bolognese!
and we have the lasagne sheets and cant tell the difference between them and brand name ones.

oh and i second the furniture polish aswell!

I'm a little geeky and check the nutrition section between brands and the value products before making the decision. Regarding Lasagne sheets the smart prices ones were actually better. If i remember correctly slightly lower calories and lower fat. They taste the same too

The malt loaf was another sp product my OH got into after checking the labels. I don't think it was particular healthier or anything but was just virtually identical.

Ok - am trying to think off the top of my head all of the items we use!

Coffee - was vile! I was prepared to drink the stuff to give it a go even if not so nice, but couldn't go beyond the first sip :o We will be trying the standard Asda brand (1.12) this week.
Tinned spaghetti - not even something I would usually desire but putting it down to pregnancy! The sp version was pretty awful. Luckily, the craving wore off after a couple of weeks so didn't have to buy Heinz for too long :p

    Stuff we use regularly:
Anti-dandruff shampoo - don't even know if they do a sp version but asda's own brand is fine and smells lovely.
Fruit and veg - haven't had anything bad yet.
Orange juice - a little less sweet and concentrated flavour but we prefer that
Baked beans, plum/chopped toms, kidney beans, sweetcorn
Ready salted crisps - seems a little less in each bag than in some brands but at 49p a multipack still great value!
Cheddar - we used to use this until i switched to organic and was more than fine
    Plain yoghurt - as above
Sardines - we had these quite a lot at one point and were fine
Brown bread - I don't think I could eat this stuff fresh (dry, not great texture) but I keep it in the freezer to use for toast and is perfectly adequate for this.
Pitta - never had them fresh but used as pizza bases are fine
    Pasta/lasagne
    Long grain rice
Noodles - we just chuck out the flavour sachets and use as we would plain noodles.
    Flour (plain and self-raising)
    Oats
    Malt vinegar
Cornflakes - I much prefer the crunchier yummier Asda standard brand but these are edible, both DH and DD like them well enough and DH has them every morning so he thinks they are fine ;)

Another note - DH tried their red wine at the weekend (didn't realise it was SP range til I noticed the small print on the bottle when recycling.) He really liked it, but then he is a fan of easy drinking reds rather than full-bodied.
Love and compassion to all x
  • Regarding own brand squash I try avoid aspartame as an artificial sweetner which was virtually impossible at first as I love diet drinks and didn't want to have to buy top of the range squash all of the time. Sainsbury's own brand was my saviour as they have a policy not use aspartimine so I buy their own brand diet coke which is nice and doesn't taste like rola-cola and their own brand squash which is usually on special offer.

Sorry for the 3 seperate posts but different point kept popping into my head!

    we use SP:

tinned sweetcorn- better than other value tins.

bourbons!- yum bourbons a bourbon in my book!

    flour- fine.

    lasagna sheets- good.

crumpets. not quite the same as leading brands but taste nice.

    gravy granules- fine.

fruit and veg is ok but usually go in eve and get the discount organic stuff for very cheap instead!

    We tried and didn't like:

tinned chopped tomatoes- world food aisle sell a different brand, same price as SP ones but not as watery.

pitta bread- only as we prefer wholemeal.

Toilet roll- false economy, we buy leading brand on offer usually charmin/ triple velvet.

Can't think what else ATM, I'll remember later.

It's possibly the shape - Asda are penne pasta, and morrisons are twists. My kids prefer the morrisons one too......it's the twist thing :rotfl:
Proud to be dealing with my debts :T
