    Morning all

Csarina yes I watched the prog about the Amish last night. It's a very confusing way of life isn't it, the family were very brave to sort of go it alone and then they were welcomed back into the fold again. Hope their little girl recovers.

    Have a good day all.

The family belonged to the Old Order Amish, who are very strict, the Bishops mentioned in the programme are not Bishops in the way we know, but a member of the congregation who is elected by the 'church'. They have no religous training.

Some of the other Amish orders are not so strict............a Church is a gathering of a number of families, when the gathering reaches say 100 they can split off and form another 'Church' meetings are held once a fortnight in a house, the congregation move round to a different house each time.

Church services can last for up to 4 hours, the women sit on one side with the chidlren and the men on the other. They sit on plain benches with no backs. So its hard on the back, you have to sit straight up. The women can take the children out if they gat restless.

After the 'service' there can be a meal, all the familes contribute something to the meal, so its a bit like a faith supper. After the meal familes go visiting.

In some Amish communites they have a practice called bundling, where a boy and girl get into bed together but fully clothed.........most Amish marriages take place in the winter when there is less work to be done on the farm. Thats when the boy grows his beard, its a sign that he is a mature married man. In some communities the girls change their aprons from the white they wore as a girl to black.

The Amish themselves are fascinating people living a life that is very different to ours. One thing that struck me about the programme alst night was that one of the families had a mirror in the house. The Amish do not have mirrors nor do they have their photographs taken, to them its a form of idolitry or worshiping a graven image.

When I was in Kentucky we visited with an charming Amish lady quilter, she was very happy to have me photograph her quilts and the house and grounds, but much relieved when I said I understood that she and her husband could not agree to having their photographs taken........all the photographs I took only show the backs of the people as far as possible, I have one of an Amish girl riding a bicylce bearfoot, but I was far enough away for her face to be blurred.

Amish dolls do not have faces for the same reason.

Sorry this has turned into an epistle............

Csarina - Thanks for your interesting post! i don't think I'd like a doll with no face, but i suppose it's what the children are used to!

katholicos - Glad the scan went ok.

    ((((HUGS)))) to all in need.

    Morning all! :hello:

Katholicos - glad the scan went okay, I'm thinking of you and willing everything to be fine xxx
Sunnygirl - huge hugs to you and your family, I'm thinking of your dad and willing him on too. My Mum had a stroke three years ago, her speech and her right hand side have never recovered, but she still has a great quality of life. I echo what others have said, stroke treatments have come on massively, so try not to fret - be strong for your dad instead, attitude is everything after a stroke. Ask the hospital to put you in touch with the stroke association, they are absolutely magnificent and will give you as much support and help as you need. I'm thinking of you all xxx
Halight - good luck with the job, I've got everything crossed for you!
Csarina - that's fascinating, I'm gutted that I missed the program, but football was on :(

Well, the lamb shanks are browned, the butter beans are boiling, but I need to go get some other bits for Dave's dinner. I'm cooking his favourite, we're going to have a nice intimate dinner then he's off to the Evil In-Laws about seven this evening :( I hate when he goes up there, his mum spends the whole time running me down and he has to bite his tongue otherwise it turns into a huge row. I don't know why he doesn't just tell her to get lost - it's not like she's ever been there for him, she ruined his young life yet now she swans around like she's a blimming saint. Anyway, mustn't rant...

Hope everyone has a good day xxx

Sunnygirl -So sorry to hear about your Dad, but as the others have said, give it a few days, things have improved enormously over the last few years.
Kathalicos- Pleased about the sacn for you.

DS didn't have to work today so he's still asleep (Wot's new!?):rotfl:
Grey and murky weather here today, can't see the sea, it's covered in mist.:o

Went out yeasterday afternoon to a work collegues place, saw lots of the girls I work with. Felt a bit out of it though, as not being there, I wasn't up on the gossip and "in-jokes", but they made me feel welcome. Took a HM teabread with me, which went down well.

Bathroom clean today, it's rotten in there:p
Anyway, have a great day all.

Sunnygirl-hugs and prayers to you and your family.

I've been very busy swishing, swiping, decluttering, tidying etc. as we have a viewer for the house on Sunday- the first since August.I'll scream if they dont turn up :rotfl:after all this effort. I was using up some cillit degreaser on the gloss kitchen units, but gave up and got the Stardrops out.Still,at least it all looks lovely, but will have to do the cooker again as Ds cooked bacon and eggs and splattered grease on the s.steel.

Had a lovely day yesterday,DB and little niece came up(5).She washed all our cups and plates from lunch stood at a stool at the sink, getting rather wet in the process and thoroughly enjoyed herself ,we read some stories, then went out to her fave shop for a few bits and then on to the park,so the day went in a flash- just had omelettes that DS cooked for tea.

Will put another loaf on soon.We will have soup from the freezer for lunch and use one of my hm 'ready meals' also from the freezer for tea,not sure what I fancy yet.

Well, off to walk the neighbours dog.Bit dull and grey out,but not too cold.
    Hugs to all xxx

An elderly aunt had a stroke a few years ago and we feared the worst but she recovered and her speech is clear. She needs a walking frame but that is more because of arthritis than anything else. From seeing her in the hospital just after the stroke we would not have believed she would recover her speech and use of her arm so well. Fingers crossed for your Dad.

The washing macine is finishing its second load so will hang stuff out on the line.

DD(15) has a friend over and they have not surfaced yet. When they do I want to make them something nice. Might cook chocolat fudge pud later as DD loves it.

I tried the impossible pie a few days ago but overcooked it so it turned out dry and I had to smother it in custard.

Got sweet potatoes in Lidl so might turn them into veggie burgers if I can stir myself ino action.

Hugs to moggins and wannabesybil and hope to see them back.

    Hugs to everybody else too.

Good Morning Everyone today is my Birthday so I had a huge pile of cards from the kids this morning and lots of lovely prezzies too.Had a bad night with YD so feeling a little spaced out this morning. But I have been up and out to Asda to grab a few essentials to tide me over the weekend as OH is back at work today till Monday. Also got a choccy birthday cake reduced by half so that will save me a job later. With feeling so tired I'm not sure I would have got round to baking

Kids have just had their brekkie sausage, poached eggs and beans with toast so I've got a kitchen full of pots to wash.Wash basket is overflowing and the ironing pile needs dealing with too.How come birthdays are filled with such mundane every day tasks when you get older?I've got some chicken steaks in the fridge that I'll turn into wraps for tea with trifle for pud and not forgetting my birthday cake:DI'd better get some serious wii fit time in this morning:D

Sunnygirl-Sad news about your Dad but I hope he makes a full recovery as they say strokes are recoverable these days

(((HUGS))) to Sunnygirl - you and your family are in our thoughts...

I have managed nearly a whole morning without trauma - almost unheard of for me!

Did my mealplan for next week and online shopping last night, for delivery on Monday. Risotto for tea tonight, and egg + chips tomorrow night.

Am really pleased this week as my ducks have started to lay! I've had a lovely white egg every day this week, although I'm not sure which duck it's from!! :p

Have got to get into my laboratory (i.e. kitchen) tonight and mix up some of my salves and creams for people. Am very pleased that a qualified aromatherapist I know wants some of my product - praise indeed!

Am also thinking of doing some baking over the weekend - really fancy a carrot cake! Must dig out recipe file!
