The 'out of stock' excuse is a classic, as they say on their site that they don't hold stocks, they build to order.
After hours of practise yesterday I succeeded in buying one today. I went through small business and headed off any upgrade suggestions firmly by saying I'd been through that yesterday, followed by "Can you sell me this computer?" When he said yes I said "I want to buy it NOW". I had to repeat this several times.
Make sure you get an order number, wait an hour then phone Customer Service to confirm it's on the system.0 -
OMG so somebody seriously truly absolutely managed to buy this lol. WTG
I might just use the afternoon ringing up now to get one0 -
I just spoke to a Mr Broderick at Dell who gave me the spiel about "won't be able to connect to the Internet on broadband and won't burn DVDs". I said I only wanted it as a basic word processor. He emailed me the specs, quoted price and order ref - which seemed to require a signature - and I emailed him back accepting the specs, price and T & Cs.
For some strange reason the total payable came up as £300.18, which I also accepted. I now have a second email asking me to confirm order details, so still not definate acceptance of my order!
I've saved all the documentation he's sent me - but I suppose there is still wriggle room on Dell's side if the notebook suddenly goes "out of stock"?
Just updating to say I now have an order number and an estimated date for delivery - 27/02/06. Still not counting my chickens..."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
theres other forums full of the same experiences like someone has already said I would of never thought a big company like dell would of come to this.
Maybe worth getting in touch with watchdog, anybody know how to complain to them?

It seesm Dell have done this before and got away with it:

I think Martin should try and get some publicity for this sham on the tv/radio.
Dell shouldn't be repeatedly allowed to get away with it.Fortune's always hiding, I've looked everywhere......0 -

It gets better and better! A complaint through email generates this response:
Greetings from Dell!!
Thank you for your mail. I am currently and have no access to my emails , however I would be back on Monday- 20th February.
Thank you for choosing DELL,
Regards,
Samrat Biswas.
If you have a query regarding order status, please call our Customer Care department on (UK) 0870 906 0010, Monday to Friday 9:00 AM till 5:30 PM or Saturday 9:00 AM till 2:00 PM
I'm off to email Watchdog now. I dodn't usually make a fuss when companies don't honour prices, but this is so blatant, actually hanging up on people that dare to insist they know what they want.
If anyone has managed to get one at £299 please post back on here as I would be interested to know if anyone did manage to get through the system.
Good luck to anyone trying.

I contacted Watchdog using the online form here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/contact/
If enough people contact Watchdog there is the outside chance that Dell will at the very least get some bad publicity from this.
