  • It's a fantastic deal just needs some extra RAM (get from crucial)
I reckon better than the current Tesco offer.

I would also opt for the extra powerful battery for £11.75

    E Value 1 - N02135 (downgrade support to 90 days)

  • Here's a post I made earlier:

Just of the phone to dell. I said I wanted to cancel as the laptop was too expensive. They offered me 10% off I said 15% please and she said yes.

    6.5% off from quidco
    15% off from dell

with 6 Cell 56Whr Primary Battery [add £11.75] upgrade

brings it all in at under £300

    Bargain

Try it it may be worth while.

Hope this helps someone else to get a cheaper deal.
  • Sounds like a good deal. How do Dells compare to the Acer laptops? I bought the Acer Travelmate 4021WLMi Notebook for £398 but have not used it yet with the intention of returning it for a refund within 28 days in accordance with their T's and C's if I find a better offer in the meantime!

This Dell offer sound like a winner. I checked out a quote for the Inspiron 1300 and putting in comparable specs gives a lower price but the Acer has a one year guarantee.

Quick Q re Quidco - it said 4.5% cashback when I just checked. Where does the 6.5% come from?

    Thanks very much!
  • Not very clued up but the Acer 4021 is intel pentium and this is celeron, so isnt the former better?

    Quidco, currently only pays 4.5%
  • The Celeron M is a similar performer to the Pentium-M (what most people call "centrino"). It is built in the same way, with have the cache (typically, not a rule) and usually a slightly lower FSB speed. What does the equate to in reality? The celeron-M during benchmarks is just about equal to the pentium-M.

The major point about the celeron-M is that it misses the advanced power saving function "speed step" along with a few other items which aren't worth noting. This basically means that the celeron-M doesn't throttle back to (say) 600mhz during low use, where as the equivilant pentium-M does. This means that the CPU uses slightly more power typically (thought not if the machine is being used heavily, constantly). Overall, however, you must remember that other items on the laptop use power also, so the difference in the CPU power usage doesn't have a massive effect on the overall power use. I believe the figure banded around is 10-15%, which of couse means little unless you are going to be the 'average' user.

Personally, if I was looking for a portable laptop, I would chose the celeron-M over the Pentium 4 all of the time, in a similarly spec'ed machine elsewhere.

Yes, but the Acer 4021 has a Pentium-M processor and NOT Pentium 4.
Given otherwise similar specs the Pentium-M (Centrino) system is superior to the Celeron-M.

I'd go with a Mobile Pentium over a Celeron-M anyday of the week.

First of all, there is a difference in performance due to the extra cache.
Secondly, with the speed step, you will be consuming less power, giving longer battery life. Not to mention less heat generated as the CPU is not running max all the time.

For a portable laptop, you want as long a battery life as possible right? You'd want it to be as cool as possible right? And you'd want it to be as fast as possible right?

None of which can be said of the celerons...which are budget cpu.
