    I will contact them then

I have to decide today whether to sign up to another course. I have about £400 left in financial aid and only doing a 30 point. My last course was 30 but everyone said it had the workload of 60 so I'm wondering whether to do something else alongside.
The next lot of courses are October start so that would require another funding application and by next year I'll hopefully be living with OH so will get less.

I have just signed up for: Exploring history: medieval to modern 1400-1900.

    Has anyone just started this?

And has anyone done any of the language courses via the OU? (thinking of doing one of them!) If so, how did you find them? I've heard good reviews about the OU so really am considering studying with them.

    Thanks!

I've done some level 1 Spanish, German and French courses and i'd recommend then, especially the Spanish which has been a pleasure. I'm now doing the level 2 Spanish and I love it. Also the communicative nature of the language courses mean that you get more support on the forums from other students than for any of the other courses i've done or seen my friends do, which really helps with the motivation aspect when you're sat at home on your own with an assignment to do when everybody else seems to be having one of those "life" thingies ;)

Proud to be dealing with my debts but not proud that they are still the same a year on.
  • I've only just found this thread - I'm an OU student too - currently on my 8th, and penultimate, course.

I can't remember all the codes for my courses - I know I did an Openings course, followed by DD100 (which I liked, doesn't seem that popular on here though - but then you either like the social sciences or you don't :o). Then U212 Childhood, a couple of 10 point courses - Listening to Music and an Introduction to Shakespeare, U211 Understanding the English Language, and now DD305 Personal Lives and Social Policy. I also had some transferred points which is why I only have one more course to go after this one. I got distinctions in both my exams, and am aiming for a First Open Degree.
Enjoying the power and freedom of letting things go.

  • I took my degree with the OU, some years ago.

I had had to leave University due to ill health and wanted to complete my degree. I had been studying German/Russian/Philosophy and left after the first year. I got the OU prospectus from the library, the only courses they had places on for that year was the year one Science (at which mum screamed and said 'no way are you handling chemicals in my house!') and year one Maths....so I did that - and got hooked on Maths! I ended up with an honours degree in Pure Maths!

I wouldn't have coped without the amazing people at the OU. I can't praise them highly enough. I have what was later diagniosed as ASD. The OU were just brilliant. I would never have managed summer schools without their help and individual care.

I am now housebound for long periods, and have been doing a little on-line study with the OU. I am thinking about formally joining and doing a second degree with them! (I'd love to do a degree in Religion...or maybe the Classics....or perhaps Music)

How long does it take to process an application form? I wish I'd sent it recorded delivery so at least I'd know when it arrived! I know it hasn't been processed yet because I paid part Tesco vouchers and part cheque, which hasn't been cashed. Patience is not my strong suit. :(

It does depend on the start date of the course, give them a ring Iwouldn't ring on a Monday, guess everyone does, and at least put ur mind at rest.

Welcome to the world of open uni, what course are you doing? x

  • Hi all,

Not sure if I should start a new thread for this - I feel a bit like I'm hijacking someone else's!

I am thinking of doing an OU course (L194 Portales) - just for fun, and I was wondering if there's anyone that has done this course in the past with any information or comments on it.

I'm completly new (well I did a very brief 10 week introductory course for "holiday Spanish") to Spanish, I have other commitments, but I would really love to start learning Spanish properly, but it isn't my main priority. I want to learn just for fun.

How much time did you allocate each week to the course?

How did you find the course?

Any comments or advice greatfully recieved.

    Many thanks in advance.
