With my usual impatience I was wondering how I would last until the course starts, then I followed the link to the openlearn free courses :j:j:j

Now I can start getting myself back into the habit of studying before the course proper starts :D
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

    Hi
I've been looking at doing DB123 and noticed that it could count towards this degree which I have now decided to aim for. I noticed it's needed along with part one of the intro to social sciences (DD131) but was wondering whether to do DD101 and use DB123 as extra credits. I have noticed that DD101 doesn't seem to be well liked so I'm now confused!!! Does anyone have any experience/thoughts on these courses?

I hope it makes sense and look forward to any input. Thanks.

    Good thinking! Thanks Littlestar.

I want to do AA100, The arts past and present, and can see on the website that registration has now opened :j

I started AA100 last month and am really enjoying it - the only thing is that there's a new topic every week, so it can feel as if you're being hustled on to the next thing before you've really finished with the last one :o I suppose it's a question of getting used to it though. It's wonderful "having permission" to learn about so many new and interesting things after so many years out of education! I've just been doing a bit about Cezanne, which prompted a trip to the National Gallery and the purchase of a couple of lovely books :D

It's a great "taster" course - oops, sorry, they call them modules now! - which gives you a chance to find out which Arts subjects you like best and teaches you study skills along the way. i was thinking originally of doing a History degree, but now I think I'll do a Humanities one instead, hopefully specialising in English Language and Art History.

    Enjoy :D:D:D

this is gonna sound really silly...... doh!

ive signed up for Y162 - (to test the water really), im due to start today, but havent got a scooby where to start.....

do i just plough into the book?
or wait for the tutor to contact me, as i assume the first call with the tutor is to go through forms etc

I've just finished Y162. I decided to start with Maths because I was too nervous at the thought of writing essays after 40 years! My tutor wrote to me before the start date, but if you haven't heard from yours at all yet, it's fine to start having a go on your own while you're waiting. Just read Chapter 1 first (there's a simple Sudoku puzzle as the very first "activity") and it tells you all about things like note-taking. Then have a look at the next chapter and see how it goes. Once you've plucked up courage to start, you'll be fine. I think the letter i got when I registered said that if you haven't heard from the tutor before the start date, "try to contact them yourself" - your Learning Support Team will help with this. Their phone number is on the Y162 website.

The first tutorial was mainly to talk about the "Learning Plan" - he or she will explain the sort of thing the OU is looking for in each section of it. It was very odd having tutorials by phone at first, but you soon get used to it. I enjoyed the course (or "module" as they're calling them now) very much - I did get stuck a few times, but that just made it all the more satisfying when I worked out what to do

    Hi
sorry to be nosey, method in my madness as they say, thinking of where B123 and DD131 whether there a big part of the degree or a need at level 1, specialise at level 2.

From experience, I did B123 and absolutely loved it, its a real eye opener, its based on financial, but you look at all elements from the individual, family, and how banks and businesses, even the goverment can affect our money. Its kept on a "person" basis, good introduction, both if you carry on the financial route you have a sound start, but the other side of the coin, if your not sticking financial, you haven't wasted the points, as its a pratical course and theres good pointers that you can use in your life as a person.

I did also start DD101, as I wanted to dabble in social sciences side, I got as far as the 2nd assisgnment and dumped the course, (not the best idea), its intense in its own way, it gets you to look at the whole picture not whats just in front of you, for example, say you'd won a nice sum on the lottery and wanted to spend 40k on a car and you went straight from the school run, - the impression that the saleman may take (no offence to car salemen), - shes just looking killing time, not a sale, yet the day after you go to the same garage - your dressed in a suit, - then the salesman would rub his hands together thinking about the commission, - you'd be expected to anaylaisis why the different attitude, you basically do a book - your working through 2 books together, its a lot of thinking skills, digging deep, anaylisising, although its a level one course, it actually felt a lot harder than a level one course, its one that you really need to concentrate on, whereas some courses you can dip and dap in as and when, this once you start - you sort feel you need to complete a batch of work. A lot of people find the course hard, - others love it, but its one you need to be dedicated to.

When I was doing it I was the doing the whole 60 points, but if you have to do it, just do the 1st 30 points and see how you feel.

Sorry if its a bit of a hit and miss reply, the course doesn't have the best press, but then there are people who love it, if we all liked the same thing it would be boring.
    Good luck thou.

My level 1s, done B123 - You and Your Money, W100 Intro to Law, Bu130 Business one (failed eca), B120 Intro to business studies,
Waiting for Y159 Intro to mgt
    Doing E112 Intro to Sport

Level 2 - B201 and B203, Both Business courses and DB234 financial follow on from B123 (great course - upped a level as you more business based)

Also doing B301 - managing strategy.

my great plan is BA Hons Business and Foundation Degree financial Studies.

Thanks for your helpful reply. I have decided to start with the 30 point part 1 of social sciences and see how I feel about it. I don't need to do part 2 for the degree if I do DB123. I'd planned on doing DB123 anyway. If I enjoy doing the first part then I may do the 2nd part as well but will se how things pan out.
]I am interested in financial stuff (did a BTEC in finance years ago) but not to the degree of doing a financial degree. I'm more interested in debt and benefit advice etc which is why I was glad I could combine both with this degree.
I think I'll prob do the db234 as well as purely for my own personal interest.
]It's been nearly 20 years since I left college so I hope it all comes back to me lol!!
How did you find the W100? That has also caught my interest also.

Hi I'm currently studying DB123 and although it is an interesting course due to personal circumstances I'm really struggling.
I recieved grants for the course does anyone know what will happen if I was to drop out at this point?
  • DD101 tries to cover so many bases- I don't think it's very well thought out TBH. There are lots & lots of grumblings about it.

    Hi
I loved W100, but it was hard going, its a good base for the early learnings of law, I would have loved to continue down the law route, but to me I knew i wouldn't end up working in law, hense stuck to business. Def a good course. x
