  • Hi everyone, cold here this morning and dull too. Well I am just waiting on my shopping being devivered by Mr A and when it is all put away I will tidy up and start into the pile of ironing. DH had to go into work today even though he was to be off, and the bags for the charity shop will have to wait until next week now. Money to pay into credit union will have to wait until Tuesday as well as it is not open on a Monday. DH will pick up meat from local butcher on way home(for Sunday's dinner). Have emailed my dear son in Australia earlier this morning, and other ds will be home from Cork later today as he has been working there since Tuesday, so plenty of dirty washing:)
Just staying home tonight and relaxing with dh and making something tasty for our tea tonight not sure what as yet. Hope you all have a nice weekend, and hugs to those who need them. Have really enjoyed reading all your lovely posts today.xx

  • I clean let the day get away with me before I logged on to say HELLO.....Oh well..........
Today, my BEST is good enough.
  • I am trying to save as much money as I can as my job ends in march 09. I looked at the household ooutgoings and worked out that the biggest waste is on food.

So last sunday I made and froze the following to fill the freezer.

    1 3 portion lasagne
2 portions of bolognaise (this was just more tomato sauce from making the lasagne)
1 large roast chicken made 4 chicken curries, and one huge pot of chicken lentil soup
Ham and pickle sandwiches for the weeks lunches
    4 portions of mashed potato
    1 large steamed jam pudding

This was then used up during the week along with some tinned stuff and some bought frozen items to feed the the 2 of us. I am seriously impressed.

This week we have had -

    No take aways (saving £30)
No shop bought lunches (saving £16)

I am so pleased as not only have I saved money but I have saved time - although I took all afternoon last sunday cooking it took less time over all.

So this week I am planning on more of the same!

fanastic - what a brilliant start.

I've never thought of freezing sarnies - I do freeze the rolls, hack into them to make sarnies in the morning and they are defrosted by lunchtime perfectly. Writing this now has just made me realise I should slice the rolls before I freeze them lol!!

  • LadyMay.......chilli vodka pasta is pasta(obviously:D ) in a sauce made with tomatoes, chillies, garlic, a dash of cream and splash of vodka.....Nigella has a recipe for it in the Feast book......I can`t say the vodka adds much to it to be honest, you can`t taste it in the sauce in the same way you can cider in a pork dish for example....mind you I don`t drink so maybe I`m the wrong one to ask about that:rolleyes:
  • Afternoon everybody:)

Having a quiet day today. OH and sons are off to watch the Warriors get hammered by Bath later. I shall be watching both Six Nations matches on telly I expect. Quite glad that Shane Williams is injured:D

OSwise I have made a big batch of my freezer veg-hash. 12 tubs ready for stews, soups, curries, pasta sauces etc. I used onions, garlic, leeks, carrots and red pepper. I've kept a portion back for my beef stew later.

I'll be making a rhubarb crumble for pud using the first of this season's forced rhubarb -the bright pink stuff.

For lunch we had hm pork pate, cheese, hm hummus, pickles and chutney plus bread and oatcakes. We followed it with pink valentine cakes:heart: :heartpuls

Valentine's day is a bit of a non-event here in the Thrift household. Me and the OH exchange cards and he says, 'I think I gave you that card last year', and I say 'You think I can remember last year's card??' And that's it.:smileyhea

    Well done you :D

It also means that you don't have to think of something to cook when you've had a hard day at work :T

And think of all the things you'll be able to cook when you do finish work and have more time... and of all the money you're saving at the moment :)

  • Hi All
    Hi Christabell.
Cat I shouldn't worry too much about DS, it's a boy thing, both my DS's were like this, neither made any effort at school or went to uni, DS2 in now a mechanic, did an apprenticeship with day release at college, got top marks & is doing really well, DD1 now has a job title I don't understand, Technical Architect something something & is on a salary that makes my eyes water.

Hubby has just been given another Valentines gift, & if you will all get your minds above the waistband, it's a DVD of Hot Fuzz, he's wanted to watch it for ages & so that's our plan for this evening, a quiet night in front of the TV.
    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester

Wow, I'm impressed :D Great start!

You'll start to find it addictive soon, and then you'll be shouting 'Whoopee' in the aisles when you find a good offer (that saves you 20p).....not that you'd ever catch me doing that of course...ahem......I'll get me coat.
Proud to be dealing with my debts :T
