The PO reserve the right to block calls to 1899 etc.Although they may be allowing them at moment. Talk Talk line rental have already blocked such numbers.
And haven't TT increased their line rental already (from their original £9.99/month to £10.49/month) to cover the 50p BT charge them for doing so?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Does anyone know if this would affect your broadband dsl? Would changing from BT to say the Post Office deal means I'd have to get reprovisoned for my ADSL? Or is it just a virtual change, that is nothing physically changes except who bills me.

I haven't changed phone providers, currently with BT, because I'm worried it might !!!!!!!! up my adsl connection. Otherwise if it doesn't, I'm jumping on the post office deal as I barely use the landline.

    Cheers

I've just signed up for Primus option 2 - I asked whether it would affect my broadband (not with BT) and they said no - also my free Caller ID display - she checked and said also no -
Has anyone lost their caller display when changing to Primus ?- there is something on the BT website about needing to use BT for some calls to keep the Privacy option by dialing a prefix (1280) to over ride but am not sure it will definitely work till I try.
Just enter the digits 1280 immediately before the full number to be dialled. Once connected, you will be charged at the appropriate BT rate for that call.

*This refers to CPS customers. CPS is a service which enables BT customers to choose to send some or all of their calls over the network of a different telephone company, which then bills the customer for them separately from the line rental, which is still paid to BT. The system reprograms the BT exchange to divert the relevant calls, thus avoiding the need to dial a prefix or to install an autodialler.

I will try it and see how it goes. i can always give 30 days notice and change back if not happy with the set up.

I've a BT line and CPS Primus Saver Option 2.

BB unaffected by the change (as it happens, from CPS with OneTel).

Caller Display unaffected (already had it with BT/OneTel and the change made no difference).

I make the weekly (after 6pm) call to the takeaway using a 1280 prefix to be on the safe side.

'Sign' up for Caller Display on the automated number - it's very quick and easy.

  • Hello all,

I am new to this money saving lark, and just had a read of the article....we are on Telewest for our Phone, TV and Internet access. Can I still use any of these CPS prefixes, or will I need to change providers? Help, I'm confused  and you do seem a very knowledgeable bunch!

HI Lynn and welcome to the Telephone Boards.

Martin's article is the first port of call but sadly the CPS route is applicable mainly to BT line rental customers.

If you are happy with your package with Telewest I would first of all suggest a look at this thread where you will find links to other threads and stories of people's success in beating down their package prices.

Best advice before "making that call" is to write down what it would cost you by going with BT and Primus say, changing your bb to someone cheaper and buying a freeview box and then see if they can offer you anything cheaper.

Hope this helps but do come back if you get nowhere with Telewest icon7.gif

Have just followed the suggestion on the moneysaver website to use Primus Saver Opition 2 for free eveining and weekend calls and to use 18185 for day time calls and mobiles. Whilst signing up for the Primus Saver package they told me that prefixing any additional number when you make calls (such as 18185) would be invalid as when you take a package with them it means that all calls will go through them. Thus meaning the 18185 number would not work. If I had realised this before I would not of gone the trouble of changing. Has anyone else encountered this?

Ignore that, it's nonsense as long as your line rental remains with BT.

Heinz that is an excellent post.
Is there no chance of that being made into a sticky and regularly updated as and when prices change as it may save a lot of unnesessary queries??
