    HI.
Thanks Heinz, I was on the wrong 18185 site. When I went on https://www.18185.co.uk/signup/ site I saw the tab at the bottem. Thanks again for your help. ( confused pensioner )
  • I have checked the call checker link and it gives the 18866 as the cheapest 0p a minute but it does not include connection costs is it worth changing if I am using 18866 as call overrider?

One point to make Joe that 18866/1899/18185 don't usually like AOL and you might have a problem in signing with your AOL email.

1899 is the cheaper now with a connection charge of 3p whereas 18866 and 18185 have a connection charge of 4p.

I have accounts with all three and use them all for different destinations icon7.gif

  • Last November 18866 changed from 3 to 4 pence per connection. I learned the hard way when the invoice came, that I should check the site for information, not expect individual notification of changes. However, the email accompanying my latest invoice said that connection was 3p per minute, so I have asked why I'm being charged 4p. It seems reasonable to ask as I have been given written notification that my charge is 3p.

I have sent 3 messages and can't get a reply. I don't want to take a chance with the non direct debit form of paying, or I'd have cancelled 18866 straight away. I realise they are "no frills", but shouldn't they address my question? I'm talking about non reply over a period of three weeks since I used their web query form, and 29 Jan when I emailed them next. And yesterday was the most recent try.

  • hi there! im new to all this, so just wanted to clarify. sorry if this sounds a bit idiotic. Is this right- i need to connect to BT option 1, and once ive done that, use an override provider to get cheap calls? im a bit confused- as martins recommends primus but i really only need an override provider for international calls. so- do i need to get bt, AND primus to get the free evening calls etc, AND another number that it cheaps for my overseas calls? or jut bt and the company for my overseas calls? am a bit confused, would appreciate any advice.

Sign up for http://www.18185.co.uk/ as well and then:

    01/02 calls
Weekday daytime (8am to 6pm Monday to Friday) - 1899 prefix
Weekday evenings (6pm to 8am Monday to Friday) - Primus CPS
Weekends (6pm Friday to 8am Monday) - Primus CPS

    077, 078 & 079 (UK mobile) calls
At all times - 18185 prefix

    0844, 0845, and 0871 calls
At all times - 1280 prefix (hop back onto BT)

    0870 calls
Weekday daytime (6am to 6pm Monday to Friday) - 18185 prefix
Weekday evenings (6pm to 6am Monday to Friday) - 1280 prefix (hop back onto BT)
Weekends (6pm Friday to 6am Monday) - 1280 prefix (hop back onto BT)

    118xxx calls
Digit translate any call to any 118xxx number to 08000192190
Digit translate any call to 192 to 08000192190

    00 (international) calls
At all times - 18185 prefix

N.B. There may well be cheaper options for some calls (e.g. without doubt, 18185 is not the cheapest to all international destinations) but the above is designed for ease of use and, as far as possible, to eliminate the need to review /change settings more frequently than, say, once a month or once every couple of months.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Prices? See http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/callchecker/ (you may also find cheaper rates for some international destinations there but, so your beside the phone list isn't too lengthy, I just recommended 18185 - which is what I use to call Spain, Germany and NZ for 4p connection and 0.5p/minute).

Primus CPS needs no local area code (so, for your evening and weekend calls to numbers with the same STD code as you, don't bother dialling the 01xxx bit).

1899 and 18185 always need STD codes.
