  • Many Government departments, and indeed large organisations in general, have pre-paid envelopes available, especially Benefits Agency, Local Council, etc. You can always phone them (or email them free) and ask for one (or a several) to be sent to you. I've done this plenty of times, and they're usually only too happy to oblige. Of course this doesn't work if you need to send a one-off form in urgently, but the general principle's sound.

I should imagine emailing or writing (if you are already sending something in) would be cheaper than phoning* as unfortunately sometimes you will have to wait a while on the phone before you get through.

Edit: *unless you've got access to free calls

You can get the cost of a phone call down to 1p for the connection and 0p per minute for the duration of the call if you use 18866. Details at https://www.call18866.co.uk

  • Hardly a saving when if first class stamps are 28p each that's only 1.4p off or for a book six at £1.68 say, that's only a saving of 8.4p.

With second class stamps at 21p each you would only save a mere 1.05p or a book of six at about £1.26, that would only be a saving of something like 6.3p.

    Massive saving don't you think?

Mind you, when you think of it, if you were to buy five books of six first class stamps that could be a saving of 42p. Not bad.

You realy do have to spend sometimes to save.

Anyway, if this is the best deal for buying stamps I'm going to go down to the nearest Super Drug and buy me a hand full.

    Cheers,

1st Class post to increase to 30p in April, so all your calculations are now out of date and Martin's prophesy is right.

One advantage to buying at Superdrug is that you can use a cashback credit card and effectively get a further discount. I don't think you can buy stamps at a Post Office using one.
