    homeowner999,

£12 a week (£48 a month) works out to slightly more than we would've paid (we would've been £40 a month)

And that was for a period of 96 months!

We weren't going to let the loan run for 96 months of course, we were going to save up and clear it as soon as possible.

Ha Ha, perhaps I should edit that to read "it would look nicer than moss".

E-mails and Recorded Delivery Letters have been sent to both Aquashield and Hitachi Finance now, so fingers crossed that's the end of the ordeal.

However I fully anticipate that Aquashield will send out a rep to offer us a lower price... which automatically grinds with me - if they can lower the price to save a cancellation, then they were obviously ripping me off the first time. I don't deal with rip-off merchants.

Hitachi will not pay out to Aqs if you cancel with them, so get confirmation from hitachi 1st. If the 'boys' turn up to inspect the roof, do not let them near it, they may start cleaning, then ur in trouble.
Your worries are not all valid as before I retired my comapny coated 2500 roofs across the UK and we NEVER had a major issue, why??? cos we did it right, first time. no hard sell, proper fitters, proper product and if you do wot is says on the tin, 'ROOF COATING' works. My house is 1972, coated in 1998 and still looks like new. The tiles are not stuck together, not porous anymore and will hopefully out live me. then some other bugga can get a new roof fitted, but a bet they won't.

PS Due to pending op, I am not commenting on this thread anymore and thank all the regulars for the banter. and if I was considering roof renovation, I would still have it done.... but not by aquashield, If it was to be done, Mike Peters Roof Coating Co (have done a few near me) and seem to do it right for the right money (no finance according to the web site)

    Little update for you guys.

OK, well, I sent two letters off on 23rd October, both royal mail next-day special delivery. One was sent to Hitachi Capital, the other to Aquashield.

I have been away in Berlin for a couple of days, and literally have only walked in the door 5 minutes ago.... to be followed to the door by an Aquashield surveyor, wanting to measure up! Anyway, I chased him, to the reply of "I'm paid anyway so I'll take a quick measure up". He was told strictly that the contract was cancelled and that I did not want him, nor any other Aquashield employee on my property (if only you could still be hung for tresspassing in Scotland).

I have had no confirmation from either Aquashield nor Hitachi Capital to acknowledge receipt of my letters, beyond having confirmation from the Post Office that they were delivered. Knowing posties today, they could've signed for the letters themselves and dumped them in any old letterbox, so that doesn't count for too much.

I am going to give both Aquashield and Hitachi Capital a call today to see what the sketch is with both companies.

I'm also wary of people turning up on threads praising companies, especially when they have 1 post to their name

Aye, you don't get much more suspicious than that! Luckily, most people can spot these things. I run a review forum and the posts by the companies themselves are pretty easy to spot! ;)

It's always tough to know if a company like Aqua ... whatever ... is any good when there is such a lack of competition in the service provided. You'll probably get a lot of quotes if you wanted to replace it and they could be pretty close to cleaning - but obviously more intrusive. You could always get quotes for replacing, indicate that you might be leaning towards such and see if the Aqua-quote suddenly drops a few hundred?

its not just the cost of the product/service, and thats bad enough as they use the same sales tactics as DG companies.
the question is actually, is it any good?
ask 10 decent builders and at least 9 will say, its useless. repair/replace the roof properly instead.
    Get some gorm.

OK, after the last post I put up...

I have now had a confirmation letter from Hitachi Capital saying the whole thing is cancelled from their end. So from that I gather that Aquashield won't get a penny, which is a good start.

Aquashield haven't (surprise surprise) sent me a letter confirming cancellation, however when I spoke to the girl in Glasgow north, at first they denied receiving the letter I had sent... until I told them I had confirmation of them receiving it in front of me. She then stammered that "oh yeah, your account is cancelled", and I told her I didn't believe her. I told her I wanted the cancellation in writing within 7 days, and also told her that the finance company had confirmed they weren't going to pay Aquashield a penny, so if they were stupid enough to send someone out now, they'd be doing work on my house and getting paid zero.

I also told the girl that you can still be hung for trespassing in the Scottish Borders. Not entirely true I admit, but I said it for the scaremongering effect.

So far have had no further sightings of Aquashield employees near my house. Fingers crossed that's the end of the escapade.

First things first, yes this is my first post but believe me i know what i am talking about. I am an NVQ qualified roof slate and tiler with over 10 years of experience.

Anyone who is thinking of using any of these roof coating firms wants an emergency appointment to see a brain surgeon. These companies basically send their pushy salesmen to your door filling you with lies.

I was offered a job with one of these roof coating firms about 3 months ago, i went over to see their contracts manager who was very eager to get me on board. After a few minutes of finding out what the company was about i realised i would be the only experienced (let alone qualified) roofer they would employ. Basically anyone willing to get on a roof with no scaffold that is wet and full of moss was welcome to a job.

When i started asking this contracts manager questions relating to roofing specs e.t.c he had no answers as the contracts manager had been a brickies labourer for the last 5 years and that was his building experience.

He then progressed to show me an employees wages and on this was the price they were charging some old lady for cleaning her bungalow roof. This price was over £3200, i told him for that money i could comfortably renew that roof with either change to give the client or renewed soffit and fascias e.t.c. He replied to this with, "roof coating is better than a new roof because once treated the roof would be just as strong and also people don't want the mess". At this point when my ears couldn't soak up any more !!!!!!!! i left.

Anyone who is thinking of having this service done please, please be very cautious.
  • I enquired re cleaning of my roof, a salesman was sent product was researched prior to him attending, so when he began his sales patter I advised him I was aware of it all, he them wen to meseary my roof (no laser) as advertised came back with a crazy square meterage, and a cost of £2,500.00 FOR A TINY 2 BEDROOM TERRACED HOUSE, he then reduced it to £1,800.00 he then asked to use the loo and while up there he miracously got a call from his manager, whom he said wished to speak to me and would call back which he did and tried the hard sell which I advised him ai DO NOT buy the price however them went to £1,500.00 I still said no as he w ould not give time for consideration. Sales person left but was hovering outside and on the phone, came back and further reduced to £1.195.00 but no pressure to commit immediately, he would call later on in the week, well thanks to your site and others plus the fact of the entire handling of the situation it is obvious of the rip off artists this firm are, need less to say I would not touch their services, they are jus cowboys in my opinion, I am by no means someone who is fooled by all that salesman patter and glossy stuf, it is all research, research, research. Be aware anyone who has contactwith this firmthey will rip you off.
  • just as an example for anybody thinking of having this done , my house i live in ... built in 1930s original roof , doesnt leak , my previous houses , 1 was 1966 built didnt leak with original roof on , my first house was 1897 ,original slate roof , no felt and had 1 leak .
just another point as well , their is whats known as underslaters felt underneath the tiles which is their to stop any water that does penetrate the tiles from going into your house , if this has gone then you need a new roof ,
wind can push driving rain back up through the tiles !!
and why when i used to put new roofs on did we have to change the felt if we put a hole in it when these companys tell you its the tiles that stop water from coming in ??
and how many of you that are having quotes to coat your roof have got water leaking in ???????
    if it aint broke ...........
  • Our next door neighbour (semi-detached to us) just recently had their roof coated by Aquash1te and the pressure washing left an almightly mess over our windows, garden, driveway and car etc.

They cleaned up around the property they were working on but left us to clean up their mess
