I've been a roofing contractor for over 40 years. There is something about this roof coating business that everyone should consider and that is that any tiled or slated roof needs two vital attributes that allow a traditional roof to last and perform so well for so long - the ability to breathe and the ability to move.
If you cover the tiles with any kind of coating then you have lost the first one because you have effectively sealed the roof and prevented the vital air circulation - result condensation which in time will rot the battens and rafters.
The natural movement of the roof will crack the coating away from the tiles and very soon the coating will start to peel away from the tiles and look a real mess. To try and remove the coating completely is not viable so your only option is to do what should have been done in the first place - re-roofing.
There is a sting in the tail - quite often your old tiles have a salvage value to reclamation yards which would be offset against the cost of the re-roofing, but if the tiles have been coated they are worthless and you will have to pay to get them skipped!0 -
Hi tedkay.
Said the same thing on page 5 of this thread.
I can't believe people are still asking about this method.
They say the coating is 'breathable and elastic', still wouldn' consider it personally.
But hey,it's their cash!0 -
5 years ago 3-4 x companies doing roof coating in UK, today about 30-40, many of which are roofers who can not get roofing work. Tedkay has not done his homework as both points are not valid. The tiles are not sealed together, only the tile surface and they can still move (bit like glazing Rosemary tiles when manufactured), The coating ( This is the sticky one as some cowbaoys may not use the real thing), is a breathable coating, like Gortex (again if the real thing is used). Recent estimates that over 11,000 UK roofs are now coated within the past 4 years is probably correct. Over 1000 commission only staff have been involved and many have set themselves up telling clients they have years of experience. Prices range from £12 to £*47 a square meter (* list price for Aquashield), and despite some very good companies doing it right, there ae a growing number of 'chancers' jumping on the band wagon. Roof coating is a technical acrylic based 28 years developed concrete surface treatment that in itself is both viable and well proven in 2/3rd of Europe and the rest of the world, as usual those who will lose out by progress are the first to shout 'snake oil', and finally the phrase that everyone forgets>>>>>>>
Roof Coating is an alternative to re-roofing you home.
No, not a direct replacement as we all know that new is better, BUT if those selling it were more honest, it is an alternative worth considering.
REMEMBER: 5 years ago there were just 3-4 'companies' offering this treatment, SHOP AROUND, ask for VAT numbers, Ltd details, insurance certificates, employed staff (not contracators), and if the paperwork has no address or a PO Box number....... they are probably not worth it.0 -
I've had the total displeasure of dealing with this shoddy company this week after one salesman bullied my elderly gran into buying a £3,500 treatment she didn't need.
She received a caller at her door one afternoon to let her know a salesman would be calling about roof treatments, so cleverly making her think she now had a pre-arranged appointment that she should keep. A salesman did call at 6.30pm and not wanting to make a fuss about cancelling this 'appointment' my gran let him in. Three hours later, yes that's right, three hours later, she handed over a cheque for £750 as deposit for a £3,500 treatment she didn't need. The salesman talked for hours, charming her and spinning her a pack of lies about her roof needing urgent treatment and why, otherwise it would cost her much more in the near future, and he was still there at 9.30pm prompting her neighbours to check if she was ok. Well of course she then handed over a cheque, she was on her own shut inside her home late at night with an strange man almost refusing to leave until he'd talked her into parting with her money and no-one to help her say no and make him leave. Man I'd have given him a cheque to leave after three hours. And my naive gran still thinks he was such a nice man - well of course he was, he was trying to swindle her out of a lot of money!
We cancelled the cheque the next day and e-mailed Aquashield to cancel and complain with no reply, and on phoning we were told the whole order had gone through to the finance company Hitachi and couldn't be cancelled, which is illegal as a cooling off period is allowed, so we then had to deal with the finance company before going back to Aquashield and sending the cancellation form by recorded delivery. I'm convinced we haven't heard the last of them though.
My gran worries about everything and is so scared of them returning and her being pushed into a corner that we've had to have gates installed to prevent cold callers and allow her to sleep at night without fear, and we have put a 'no door to door salespeople' sign up too. She has been wanting gates for a while, but suddenly it became more urgent.
The estate on which she lives is a nice estate with mostly elderly, vulnerable people living on their own - Aquashield knew this when they deployed what I'd call dishonest, underhand and even despicable tactics to rip them off. I am so fuming with them, and find it disgusting they are allowed to continue doing this. I considered going to the local newspaper to warn others, but I don't want to publicise the fact she's on her own and a bit of an easy target!
So if you hear the name Aquashield, please don't let them in your home, don't deal with them, don't accept a card, just say NO and slam the door.0 -
Natbag.
Aquashield, shieldaaqua, whatever they call themselves.
A coating over tiles is a no no.
Ask a roofer, i mean a genuine ROOFER (and I am one) if they would have any coating inside or outside on their own tiled roof.
They will laugh at you.
It's a con, if your tiles need 'coating' they need replacing.
Chances are they need neither.
It's a disgrace that these people can legally harass folk such as your gran.
They need a good thumping.
Knowloads.
You are right in one way, new IS better, however, I disagree that coating the tiles is an alternative.
It is a waste of money in my humble opinion.0 -
Oh really?
So why did you post THIS a few months ago?
I have a small mortgage of around £23,000.
I fancy taking out a loan for a kitchen, drive, holiday blah blah blah.
I am thinking in the region of 15-25,000.
In the current climate, what is the best route to take, a personal loan or add it on to the mortgage?
Hmmmmmm..... a killing.....hmmmmmmm.
You really must learn to read, I said, 'IF I wish'.
I'm not that sort of person, I don't want to take advantage of any one.
Unlike those that jump the queue thinking it is their right.0 -
