  • To all who have recently been accepted, Vanquis get a really bad reputation, but I went from £250 to £2750 in 18months and found them very good to deal with.

Just play by the rules and you will find it a great tool in rebuilding your credit file!

I never went anywhere near the £2750 and closed the account 8months ago after being accepted for a mainstream card.

To get the 'increase'-how did you use the card.

I've just had my first increase to £1000-and hope to get further increases-not because i wish to use the available credit-but simply to get a bigger limit in case of absolute emergency(stranded abroad) and to show on credit file that i have been regarded as a good risk.

To get additional increases above £1000-is it wise to use card regularly-or put very little spending on it.

I would not really use the card-and would pay off in full anything i do use it for - but reckon if i don't use some of the available credit-they may not increase limit again so:

how is it best to use/not use the card to get further credit increases ?

Was the 1K your first increase and if so after how many statements?

How long were you with them and when did you open account? I just got 5th statement and no increase. always pay atleast half of debt to them so they make interest just to bump credit before i pay full bills. I even took it to £248 spent and nothing :O

Been with them since early February. Got the increase letter after my fourth statement and it has just gone up today (5th statement also arrived).

I use the card every month, normally anything from 25% of the balance to 75% or more, never ever really close to the limit though. I then pay off in full, so its pretty clear to the CC company I can handle the balance. This kind of use is the best way to tickle their internal scorin system... Based on research I've done. Your paying only half of the debt may look to them like debt stress, after all their credit limits are tiny, often only a fraction of a month's wages!
    Oh, you wee bazza!
  • Just had a letter confirming from my July statement my limit will increase to 3K. Which I think is the maximum they do ?

Use my card quite regular, petrol and shopping and Internet sales.

Normally make about 4 or 5 extra payments a month to keep things under control..

Never been anywhere near the credit limit through, think highest it's been was 1250 when I put car insurance on it.

Still same old card though....not a gold one...

I got fairly rapid (4 months apart) increases to my credit limit when I signed up to Vanquis. £250-£2500 in the space of 12 months. Became a "Gold" customer about 7 months ago. Recently had a letter advising me my APR was dropping down to 34.something%.

Usage wise, I use mine purely on fuel and food in a month, and once when I booked a holiday but it was all paid off when the statement came in. I've effectively never paid them a penny in interest.

As others have said, tow the line and the service is fine. It's when you start leaving a balance that the APR becomes crippling :)

Made contact with them again today, lady was much nicer than the man I spoke to yesterday, who tbh was very agressive over the PPI. In fact she asked me today (since she could see had gone through some of the questions) was it right I had signed up!! Not sure if that was a try-on to get me to take out the product or that guy yesterday- who asked me very agressively "how do we know you will pay us back"- err they are the creditor who decides to lend to me, making out I must have their product so they know I will pay is a bit cheeky! And as I said it was a very agressive tone.

Anyway, she did ask me again a few times but I said no and she gave up easier, also no to the cash advance. I wasn't asked about setting up a DD but I may do that when everything comes through as I was approved. :)

Went through TopCashBack and the £31.31 has tracked, hopefully they will pay out.

Applied yesterday and got the we'll be in touch message. I didn't want to wait so I phoned them and said I was going on holiday so I would miss any call they made. He asked me to confirm my details then went for the hard sell of PPI and a cash advance which I declined and that was that! So happy to be able to get on the credit ladder again.
I have a few defaults from when I was young and stupid so I will use this as a credit builder and that's it.

I take it I'll have a £250 limit then? My APR is 39.9% which I'm happy enough with as it won't matter.

Not necessarily: I started on 34.94% and £500. I have just 2 defaults dating from 2008 when I was made redundant both of which are being paid off on payment plans. Perhaps they look more kindly upon those of us who went under during the banking crisis.
