That can't be right or you wouldn't be able to use the card in America at all cos nowhere over there uses chip'n'pin (or at least they didn't last time we were there).
Well thats what i thought, but I rang to tell them I was going to the US so that they would be ok with me using it there, and when i said about swiping it for car hire they said that could not be done as the cards cannot be swiped. I am gutted as thats the reason i got the damn card! And we are going to Florida in 4 weeks. Maybe you could try ringing and asking them? Maybe I just got an idiot when I rangPlease God, help me stop spending!0 -
They are saying this because in theory you could keep spending and spending without the card being authorised and that scares them! You'll be fine so long as the numbers are embossed which they are - dont worry!

OK hopefully will be alright then..however if not the car hire company have agreed to take my debit card as long as they run a credit check.
Nikkisun, car hire company will need $200 swipe on your card, so your limit should be fine. Will let you all know if I have any problems when I come back! Please God, help me stop spending!0 -
Thanks - I tried to phone them but apparently their systems are down, tried to explain that it wasn't an account related question and just a general query but she just repeated that the systems were down and then hung up on me! Don't you just love the customer service??xxx Nikki xxx0

Haha yep they truly are outstanding. I had rung them twice to ask about using it for car hire, and had been told no both times. The trouble is I feel they arent REALLY listening to the question thats being asked...not sure if they think I mean using it as a swipe in a chip and pin machine which of course is not allowed I think for any card which has chip and pin. But I did stress that I was using it in America and it was for the car hire swipe for the deposit.
My credit was raised afte 7 months from £250 to £750 by the way.
Hope you get through to them soon, hey I guess they cant answer your question when the systems down because they dont know the answers to anything without a computer to tell them! Please God, help me stop spending!0 -
And just to add, if you do ring them be sure to tell them the card will be swiped, if you just say is it ok for car hire they will think you mean its going in a chip and pin machinePlease God, help me stop spending!0

I have just spoken to Vanquis again, and they have confirmed this card CANNOT be used in a machine that is not chip and pin. The girl said that if it is a swip and sign machine that is no good. If anyone has any info which contradicts this I would love to hear it as Vanquis are ticking me off at the moment and I didnt want to have to leave the equivalent of $400 on my debit card for the car hire swipe. Please God, help me stop spending!0

Just though I'd confuse the issue a little :rotfl:
There is a garden centre near to where I live and they don't have chip and pin (why I don't know) but they still swipe and sign credit cards. It was only a couple of weeks ago I was in there and bought something using my vanquis card, no problems with payments.
I guess its the usual vanquis chatter (ie lets make it up as we go along)
If anyone is near to spalding pop into Baytree and you will see........0
