  • I notice on your Virgin M .xls that under the "Off Peak Time Bands"
The weekday "Start Hour" is 08 and "End Hour" is 17.
Should this not be the other way around, i.e. Weekday OffPeak starts from 17:59 to 08:00 the following day?

I must admit that as I only have week-end Virgin calls free I didn't bother to look at the off-peak times. Although looking at Kevin's original spreadsheet he has similar start time before end time.

Perhaps someone else could help with a definition.

Many Thanks for the spreadsheet blanik.

I have used my Orchid on a BT line without any issues for many years and without the need to update the routing. However, I am now moving my line rental and calls to the Post Office and want to make some changes.

I am new to this and do not have a modem and am not very clued up about how to use/set one up. Do you have to use a modem to input the details or can you simply dial the programming code from a telephone to update the orchid dialler?

3 ways to use the spreadsheet:-

use a computer / laptop with a build in modem, the problem is that newer laptops do not have them as standard.

Add a USB modem - you can usually find cheap ones on ebay/

Use the spreadsheet to generate the codes, then enter them manually via a telephone handset.

I agree that the titling in Kevin’s useful spreadsheet may seem a little confusing – perhaps it would be better if the title was ‘Time Bands’ and not ‘Off Peak Time Bands’.

The programming string produced in cell D20 is to define the time window when calls will be routed according to the DAY selections. Thus the times should indicate when the DAY period starts, and when it ends.

This was explained as follows in the guide that Orchid supplied:

    1. To set Daytime and Weekend Times.

The standard is for daytime to run from 6am (06.00) to 6pm (18.00) and for weekends to start 1 minute past midnight Saturday Morning (00.01) and to end just before Midnight Sunday (23.59)

Before you set these please check with your service provider what their free call time parameters are.

To set, where Monday = 1 and Sunday = 7, lift the handset of the connected phone and dial the sequences as below. Once each one is complete replace the handset and go on to the next one.

To set Daytime 6am to 6pm:
    * * * HourHourMinuteMinuteHourHourMinuteMinute * 5
    ie: * * * 0600 1800 * 5

To Set Weekend Time Saturday 00.01 to Sunday 23.59:
    * * * Day of the week HourHourMinuteMinute Day of the week HourHourMinuteMinute * 6
    ie: * * * 6 0001 7 2359 * 6

Orchid's documentation is patchy at best, but I hope that will help you - ask again if there’s anything else you’re not clear about.

Does anyone know a way to use an orchid to bar calls just during the day and allow them off peak?

Doing so might be dangerous but it would certainly be possible to do that.

Rather than actually barring such calls though, making 08000192190 (0800 019 2190) a new Carrier Code (say, carrier 8) and then changing the daytime column in every Routing Rule to read 8 would do the job.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

You can bar a set of numbers at all times by setting up a Barred Handling code, but I think this will apply at all times.

Not tried this but one way to barr at certain times may be to set up a carrier code with a prefix that will always fail - perhaps 1471 or the fictitious 01632 exchange http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Number_Change#Numbers_for_drama

Then use this prefix during the day - the dialer will try and dial the original outgoing number after the prefix but should fail.

edit: x-post with Heinz, he beat me to it.

In fact, this method would have the advantage of making it easy to add 'exceptions' to that process.

For example, if you wanted to allow calls to 01632 456789, simply adding a routing rule for that specific number would override the standard 'use' of Carrier 8 (0800 019 2190).

  • Hi all,
I'm trying to get to grips with rejigging my Orchid V4+ Dialer.
I bought it about 6-7 years ago and has been working on the original configuration I set it up with at that point. Now I'd like to start from scratch again and setup new carriers depending on the type of call I'm making.
My main question revolves around the several 0844 numbers that can be used to route mobile and International calls.
Is it possible to set the dialer up to dial (for example) 0844calls.co.uk, when a mobile or international number is entered, including the "#" that 0844calls.co.uk requires to "close" the number to be dialled?

I'll be using the manual programming method to programming method to programme the diaper.

    Thanks in advance.

A # within a V4's Carrier programming denotes a one second pause so you'd need to use up to five at the end of the 0844 number to allow time for the announcement to start anyway.

However, a # in the dialled string is allowed through just like a number is so, dialling the target mobile or international number with a # on the end does just that.
