Bunny, I am the same for all cooking but baking, I tend to use recipes as a starting point rather than a road map, but it's a bit like anythig in life, you have to know and understand the rules before you get a feel for how far you can get away with bending or breaking them :) I guess it just comes with experience. If you aren't getting good results with the 'starting point' method the 'road map' method might be better for a little while. I'm glad things didn't turn out too bad, I'm sure they'll taste lovely ;)

My cake never got made today, some friends called to ask if they can come to ours tomorrow evening so I'm going to cook it for then instead.

Elona - Funnily enough I was reading my Tightwad Gazette book earlier, looking at the breakfast muffin recipe and trying to think up some interesting combinations. Also wondering idly to myself how big a muffin is over there? The American -style muffins in the supermarkets are huge.

Well, it's snowing here again  although it's forecast to turn into sleet and rain I think.

Hi all, hope you are all having a good weekend - I havem't read back, I am sorry, but I will catch up in a bit. It's still very snowy/slushy here. :(

I am at work too, which isn't great and OH is "keeping me company" which just makes it worse. What really irritates me is that my sort-of-pseudo-supervisor seems to think that OH's work is linked to mine. Which it isn't. I am getting a little annoyed at this.

I tried the baked ham recipe from Tessa Kiro's falling cloudberries - it's okay but really quite salty. I don't know what I have done wrong here - I followed the recipe to the letter. I think possibly because I never salt anything I am just feeling it more.

Still panicing about the outlaws coming. No attempt has been made to book them a hotel at all. I can see another row coming on. Started the on-line shop in ocodo (to use the vouchers) and it came out cheaper than all of the other three. I have decided that they can eat what they are given and if they want to complian they can go out.

OH has booked flights for us to go to Korea next month. *sigh* I wouldn't mind, but it's a work thing. It's always a work thing.

I e-mailed a guy in the netherlands last week asking if he would employ me. No reply yet, but it has only been one working day. :o

Supposed to be going out to dinner tonight as it was OH's birthday yesterday. We went out last night too and I am very tired.

have a good evening all, cel x

Hello everyone, hope you've had a good Sunday?

I've had quite a relaxing one, which has been good. We had vegetarian haggis, mashed potato and carrots at lunchtime, so only need to worry about a snack this evening. Might make bruchetta (sp?) or have poached eggs on toast.

Watched the rugby yesterday and today and by far and away the best match was Ireland v France yesterday afternoon. Scotland v Wales wasn't good from the Scottish perspective and a lot of talk about team selection not being the best. Hmm, it'll be an interesting 6 Nations!

    Have a good evening everyone!

Hi everyone- hope you've all had a good weekend,we've been very lazy today apart from a quick tidy, and dh mopped the kitchen floor. Its been snowing again here for a bit so all covered in white again, but we've been let off very lightly.

As ds2 was being out we decided to finish off the gammon I cooked on Friday and have it with egg chips and mushrooms, and I made some blueberry muffins for afters, never made muffins before.Think I'd better freeze some quick before we scoff the lot.

I'm mad with myself as I've broken some bits off my Kenwood-I wasnt paying attention momentarily(watching Larkrise on catchup !) and didnt notice the bowl on the processor had filled up as I was merrily slicing veg up ,its pushed the slicer up and sliced the pusher,a piece has jammed in the slicer and the spindle has also broken. Good job the spare parts dept.is so good, now ordered.

Time to settle in front of the telly now,so hugs to all.
Jackie,so glad you had a lovely birthday yesterday.
Sybil hope you are all well, and reading if not posting.

Kazzaw, I don't have 'a recipe' as such, but I plan to use the tightwad gazette 'build your own muffin' guidelines. I like the idea of breakfast muffins (I'll freeze some and defrost a few each evening for the next morning) because Dave is bored of toast, and I'm sick of buying him breakfast cereals that end up going stale because he's got bored halfway through a packet. This is the basic recipe:

    2 to 2 1/2 cups of grain
    1 cup milk
    Up to 1/4 cup fat
    1 egg
    up to 1/2 cup sweetener
    2tsp baking powder
    1/2tsp salt
up to 1 1/2 cups additions

Cooking temp is 400F for 20ish minutes

The article explains how to adapt the basic recipe to what you have to hand, which is far too long to transcribe here but I could possibly scan it for you if you're interested (PM me). So the recipe I am going to try is:

2 cups flour (I'll add extra 1/2 cup if the consistancy looks too fluid)
    1 cup reconstituted dried milk
    4tbsp melted butter
    1 egg
    2tbsp sugar
2 1/2 tsp baking powder (according to guidelines I might need to use more)
    1/2tsp salt
    1/2 cup grated cheese
    1/4 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup sweetcorn (I really like sweetcorn muffins!)
    Some herbs - prob parsley

Would love to see other peeps' recipes to see if my recipe is even approximately similar to other peoples', although I can see this not working brilliantly, I figure that it should at least be edible :rotfl:
  • Evening all
DS popped in to collect his washing & jar of marmalade, he's staying at DD's this week, he's dog sitting while she is on holiday. I shall wear my newly finished gilet to work tomorrow if it is cold, my fingers are aching from the weight of it, but it's done now.
The roast lamb was yummy & we won't eat again now till the morning, so only 2 meals today.
Heavy rain & snow forecast here for tomorrow, at the moment it's just rain.
Hubby's back is still painful, but it doesn't stop him wanting some more 'appreciation', not easy when the only position he is comfortable in is stood up straight & supple I ain't.
    Have a good evening everyone.
    hugs Hester
