Justamum - Thanks for the reassurance! Just a question, do jumble sales still exist? I haven't been to one for about 20yrs!!! I can remember my nan unpicking woollen garments to reknit.

DH made me laugh the other day. One of his younger colleagues was talking about clothing with him. The conversation went like this

Colleague - 'one thing I don't get, why do they put a button on the jumper label? I don't understand why you need a button there.'
DH - 'to sew it on if you lose one of them'
Colleague - 'oh I'd always wondered about that!!'

    It's a different world..............

Do people still keep spare button tins btw? I used to love playing with my nan's one!

Oh what wonderful memories you have just brought back to me.... I used to play with our button box all the time as a child, sorting them out and counting them. When I was first pregnant I started a button box, it seemed like a mummy thing to do and that my children would want to play as I did, now they are 14 and 11 and have never been interested in the button box! I sent it to our local charity shop about a year ago and now wish I had kept it...!

My gran used to make a stuffed ox heart roast when cash was short. She cut the tubes out and stuffed it with HM sage and onion stuffing and it roastyed in the oven next to the fire. I always loved it - didn't seem at all odd. It was served with an oxo gravy (as was everything :rotfl: ), mashed potatoes and veg.

I'm not so keen on sheep's hearts as they are fiddly. I do have a tip for liver. We had this on Saturday. I didn't bother cutting off the tubey bits! I cooked the potatoes for mash, get the veg going and then make this mix:

Finely chop a small onion - recipe says shallot!
finely chop a clove of garlic - I use the fine grater bit on the cheese grater.
    chop - I use scissors - parsley. If I don't have any I don't bother.
Half a lemon - I freeze value lemons and then blast them in the microwave.
    half a cup of water.

Mash the potatoes and keep warm, drain the veg and keep warm.

Dry the liver and season with salt and pepper.

melt butter/marge/oil in a pan and fry the liver. Push the cooked liver to the side of the pan and put the onioney mix in and cook for a minute - add the lemon juice and water and bring to the boil.

Pull the liver back and stir it all together to get the bits off the bottom of the pan.

    Serve.

    Really delish.

I've got a button box,a ribbon box and a general bits and bobs box.I'm one of those people that you ask when you want someting but don't want to buy it.
I even amaze myself sometimes at what I find in the latter and can't even remember where some of the stuff came from.Always comes in handy though, eventually.
  • Morning! Well for dinner tonight I will be continuing to use up my leftover chicken from Saturday night - one chicken, how many meals is a challenge I do quite regularly - like I say my friends think I'm odd. So far we've had pot roast chicken with potatoes and green beans, reheated chicken with leftover cooking liquid with yoghurt stirred through served with pasta (2 nights running), tonight will be a curry with more leftovers, and then a stock and probably a soup with whatever is left - not bad for a £5 free range chicken  which was on offer. I can't bear wasting meat especially. I worked with a vegetarian who had the belief that he would never choose to eat or buy meat but if there was a choice between meat being wasted or eaten, he would eat the meat instead of being disrespectful to the animal that had died.

I must crack on with my knitting today. I'm making scarves for everyone for Christmas.

Mrstittlemouse - I'm a bit like that too - my neighbours quite regularly pop over to borrow bits because they know that if anyone has them it will be me ;)

Sunset gold - I wonder what happened to my nan's button box. We used to use them for currency when playing shops with her cupboard contents. My daughter is currently using my winter stores to play shops with. Her bedroom shelves are full of tins of beans and fruit where she has turned it into a shop
Separated 17/06/10, now dealing with the fallout
House sold and debt cleared 23rd May 2014. Now saving to get married!

tesco are doing a 'spend £50 and get 5p off a litre' at the moment

even if I'm not going to spend £50 I stock up on cat and dog food as that's where I usually get it from and it won't go off

    hth :)
