You could try soaking it in a water/vinegar solution for 30 minutes then putting it on the line outside to drip dry. This should get rid of the smell but I think it might well come back when you reheat it as it's the wheat the holds the heat and these will all be burnt now :(.

What about if i cut the bag - empty the wheat - buy some more wheat and sew it back up?

Is it just regular wheat you buy from supermarket? Might add a drop or 2 of lavender oil in too?
    What do you reckon?

Could you add rice? Probably easier to get hold of than wheat? I'm sure that I have read somewhere on OS about people making rice bags?

http://www.quiltbus.com/microwave-bags.htm - just found this site - they recommend using whole corn instead of wheat/rice as it stays cleanest for longer - may give this a go!

And if its any good ill make a few for christmas presents - whole corn cant be too dear can it? Got plenty of old fabric! :)

I'm impressed with the number of young OS'ers on the boards here :T

I'm 17 but worry like I'm 30 sometimes! I only found MSE when I decided I needed to cut down on makeup costs and typed it 'aldi makeup' for reviews on google. It was instant love!!

Do people still keep spare button tins btw? I used to love playing with my nan's one!

I have a box where I keep all my spare buttons, and ones I take off clothes before I sew them into something else. I used to love playing with my mums spare button box when I was little too!

HI Kersplatt, im a youngen - *cough* 19 *cough* and into the OS ways - my dp thinks im nuts!

My boyfriend is just the same! Constantly asking me why I’m doing something then says ‘oh, old style?’ but he’s slowly joining in.
It is a different world. Ex-colleague kept saying she was skint etc but then in the next sentence she spent £100 on a pair of jeans

Sounds just like my sister!! Although recently she keeps on asking me where I get my clothes from, she constantly gets the same answer ‘Ermm, matalan.’ She’s started giving me her clothes to adjust too! She’s learning the art of budgeting too. Even if it is ‘if I spend nothing this week I can afford xxxxxxx from topshop next week’ better than nothing!

I always use rice (the cheapo economy stuff) and add dried lavender too if you've got any. Just don't get the bags wet, or the rice starts cooking... I make mine out of old towels - cut rectangles out of the towel around the worn holey parts, fold in half, sew up around the three edges leaving a small hole at one end to pour the rice etc. in (a funnel is handy here, or improvise one out of some rolled up cardboard), then sew the final hole up. If you sew the final hole up in a different colour it is easier to unpick if you need to refill due to cooked rice or just need to wash the towel/bag after red wine accidents. :rotfl:

Great Christmas present by the way - I went mad with them a few years ago in festive colours and I still see them in use at peoples' houses. I believe I made 15 and it came in at less than a tenner (new towels, how profligate of me!).
    On a mission.
  • Just thinking of pilchards on toast for tea - really used to love them as a child, I am afraid our kids have been spoilt with the best of everything and will probably turn their noses up - oh well tough!
Maybe this credit crunch could have a silver lining and kids might appreciate what they have got already instead of asking for the latest games console and overpriced games, and make do, and maybe, just maybe communities might return because everybody will be struggling, there will be no keeping up with the Jones's because they too have been hit hard.
Maybe they should log on to this site and start learning how everybody helps each other xxx
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I'm only just 28 and i feel old now in comparison to all these young'uns! My hubby thinks i'm mad but this forum makes so much sense to me, i just seem to have been naturally programmed with "old school" values, finding this place was like coming home!
