  • Justamum - Thanks for the reassurance! Just a question, do jumble sales still exist? I haven't been to one for about 20yrs!!! I can remember my nan unpicking woollen garments to reknit.

DH made me laugh the other day. One of his younger colleagues was talking about clothing with him. The conversation went like this

Colleague - 'one thing I don't get, why do they put a button on the jumper label? I don't understand why you need a button there.'
DH - 'to sew it on if you lose one of them'
Colleague - 'oh I'd always wondered about that!!'

    It's a different world..............

Do people still keep spare button tins btw? I used to love playing with my nan's one!

  • Happytails - hello!! If you want any girl bits lemme know - I have a house full of baby clothes from DD (now 4) and I want to get rid of them to a good home. Ebay seems to be pretty slack at the mo.

DH also thinks I'm slightly crackers, but y'know I'm quite happy with my eccentric label, it means nothing surprises him anymore and you soon find out who your friends are when you greet them at the door in a woollie hat and fluffy pyjamas ;)

That made me giggle - my nan has hundreds of buttons at the ready if i ever need one, i have started my own collection now also!

I read somewhere on OS board that someone *made* from scratch a pasta sauce and their friends were amazed and one said 'i thought you could only buy this in a jar!' - had me laughing!

Something that really brought current economic situtation home to me today was friend getting a call from his wife, she works for one of the banks linked to the Iceland banks. She's been told to stop working as there's no money to pay them. He's worried sick. Thankfully they have some savings but they're not sure how long things will go on for.

  • Unixgirluk - it really looks grim ahead tbh. My brother in law works in property and was made redundant in July, he hasn't been able to find a permanent job since and it looks like they will be having to rent out their house and move in with parents (along with their 3 small children). That said they haven't cut back on their spending and are incredibly wasteful besides - they only eat the breast off of a whole roast chicken :faints: at waste!! They don't seem to recognise that things may not get better and a new job may not 'turn up eventually'

I think Kersplatt a lot of people will have to re-assess their priorities including the consumerist teenagers. Would be nice if we could get a ban going on adverts till after 9pm except for adverts for supermarkets and food (except fast food restaurants). Is it just me but I don't remember this many "you want this" kind of advert when I was a teenager (early 90's). For some people this is going to be a hard lesson but a necessary one.

Its horrible isnt it! I got made redundant last week and my partner is looking for a fresh job as the company is loosing money and will end up closing

Not a good time for anyone really. My friend just asked me to go cinema (freetickets) but i turned it down as its 10 miles away and not wasting petrol, i suggested she come to mine and we watch a movie on sky and have some hearty tea - she is sheltered living with parents and all her income is disposable so im thinking her answer will be no.

  • Unix - Oh I know, my dad's line when we were small was 'if they need to advertise it it mustn't be very good because otherwise it would sell itself.' We totally believed him.

I feel sort of guilty because I know it will be a hard but necessary lesson for a lot of people. But really he human race cannot keep going on consuming. We're just great big locusts really.

I can still remember my favourite Christmas present as a child was when my mum made me pyjamas and dungarees on her sewing machine, she then made exactly the same clothes for my favourite doll so we could dress in the same things. I was four and can still remember how excited I was by it!!!

Oh I must be verrrry old fashioned then as I insist on taking buttons of everything before they get "ragged". I also take hooks an eyes off old bras..... and the lace........ :o My Mum used to regularly undo knitted items and make up new - I think I've still got a couple of cardigans she knitted for me like that. I could also tell it was Christmas coming as a child as the knitting pattern for a new cardigan for Dad was brought out. The wool was always bought the weekend after Bonfire Night and was a sure sign that Christmas was upon us!

It is a different world. Ex-colleague kept saying she was skint etc but then in the next sentence she spent £100 on a pair of jeans and was wondering out loud how much it would cost to have her make-up professionally done for a christmas do...... and she said £23 for an all-in night out was too dear (and that included the food and booze.....)

In the words of Tony Hancock "oh dear, oh dear, oh dear"..... What will really hack me off though and I can guarantee will be said is when people haven't got any money as they have spent like billy-o it will be "it's not my fault" (I refer you to the ex-colleague who has CCJs and said "We'll it was their fault they shouldn't have given me credit"..... I did at this juncture point out she had not filled in the forms with a gun at her head.... don't think she liked that.........)
But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green :D
