I bought loads of tins of sardines last week, Morrisons do Sardinellas 22p for 150g or 'normal' sardines 120g for 35p, 16 Yr DS is always eating and I reckon these make a really cheap and nutritious snack for him on toast.
Only trouble is he needs more lessons in clearing up. I came down this morning to a very fishy smelling kichen , not nice first thing in the morning!
I must admit the thought of a pilchard shepherds pie makes me shudder but maybe I should try it first!

Pilchard shepherd's pie is ACE and sooooo cheap.
If you want to stretch it even further, mix the potatoes and the pilchards together to form fish cakes and serve with chips. Will feed and army, or eat half and freeze half.

ooh will have to try those 'pilchard cakes' sound yummy!! I eat quite a lot of those and peppered mackerel
Just been catching up as I didn't get time to read over the weekend I'm so sorry to hear about the job problems everyone's starting to experience and tax credits  I didn't even think about those..yikes thats going to be a huge worry for people isn't it..
I'm so glad OH left the printing trade as last time he went on a 3 day week and his old firm's not been any where near as busy recently as they were then...
I've been checking through our stores to see if there were any gaps I needed to plug but I really can't see any fortunately so after xmas when we are DEBTFREE :j :j I'll be concentrating on a cash emergency fund next..we have no savings whatsoever as we've been throwing every spare penny at the debts, but its been so worth it.0 -
It's mashed pichards or fillets of mackeral, on wholemeal toast, with thinly sliced tomato and white pepper, every time for me.
Cheap and lovely, not cheap and nasty.
Yum! Yum! Yum!Felines are my favourite

I've been reading about other peoples towns and if people are still shopping etc..Where I live there are still plenty of shoppers on the streets but not necessarily buying stuff.
The general feeling round here is 's*d it lets have a good xmas THEN tighten our belts'
It's quite scary really as most of the spending will be on cards and then with the economy in the state its in does this mean they'll be paying through the nose for their celebrations in ever increasing interest rates on their cards??
No-one round here seems remotely bothered..are they all just planning to go bankrupt??
Where I live the atitude has always been 'oh well the state will bale me out' but I wonder if they will be? Very worrying attitude to things...0 -
Now pilchard and potato fish cakes sound absolutely yummy, it's the same ingredients to the shepherds pie so why do they seem so different ??

Great idea for a thread Primrose
ooh I don't know though..to answer your original question as other posters have said folks were a lot different back then, much more resourceful..
I can see more people having to cook from scratch again but a lot of the things people over here had to cope with during the war years, people would not even attempt nowadays..even if they had to!!
The attitude is so different..and to be quite honest the 'skills' aren't there anymore. Most people in the 1940's had some sort of trade or craft which they could in turn put to good use or barter with..now people very rarely have these..(ok I know us O/Stylers do...) but how many people do you know PERSONALLY who can knit, sew, preserve, bake etc etc??0 -

Its the same round my way - but what happens when the state goes bankrupt ? Remember the old saying 'what goes up must come down'?
Thank God for self reliance and planning ahead. I hope our lords and masters have been able to avert financial disaster - but its just as well to keep one eye out for you and yours - it's a fair bet those in control are keeping one eye on their escape route.....
So if they are going to be prepared 'just in case', then so will I!SMILE....they will wonder what you are up to...........;)0 -

This is a very good point. Ethics aside, it has been so much cheaper over the last few years to buy mass-produced, supermarket / Primark etc. clothes that it has not been all that moneysaving to learn to knit etc. It is still popular with some as a hobby, but this is for fun. The quality of the fabric in these mass produced clothes is so bad that the clothes have become pretty much disposable - wear them for a season and then throw them away - few items are good enough quality that they could be made into childrens clothes for next year. Then you have the children that would not been seen dead in anything without a label; these children will have to come down to earth with a loud bump as money gets tighter for their parents.
As imported clothes become more expensive then I think that these hobbies will once again take off. Personally, I have taught myself to sew - painfully slowly - and I can just about make something wearable! Knitting, however, is something I constantly battle with....I have never been accused of having the patience of a saint and I get so frustrated by knitting.
In a way, I welcome clothes becoming somewhat more expensive, it has become rediculous the way that labels now have to be worn on the outside, and children expect to have £100 odd quid spent on a pair of trainers. We have become so wasteful over the last couple of decades.0 -
