She says what she is cooking very often, interesting to read. She uses a combination of tins, bottled and packaged food. Clearly stores and makes a lot of jams, preserves etc.
I'm going to read it again and make a few notes.
Must go - Mr. T's van has arrived!!
I bought Nella lasts war aaages ago and am still trying to get past the first chapterI'm looking forward to reading it as my Mum borrowed it and thought it was great! I'll have to put this other one on my wishlist for chrimbo thanks
Hi ValliI mainly use the understairs cupboard but am steadily invading other rooms at the moment due to some too good to miss specials!! I blame MrT...
I have a few nice lidded toyboxes which don't look out of place on the top of bookcases or under the bed.I also store my paper goods in dollybags in the kitchen on pegrails and in the bathroom. If Bounty is on special though I have to use the loft :rotfl:0 -
Hi
have been popping in from time to time and notice with interest how you are storing dry goods. Would that I had the space...however is there anywhere that gives a sesible use by date on tinned goods or should I just go by the manufacturers date?
How long can I keep homemade jam - at the moment my oldest is 2 years. I make three types...does the fruit type make a difference?

Right, off to count tins of toms already in stock and find somewhere cheap to buy more!
Hiya,
I noticed this last week, and tinned toms are one of my most-used storecupboard items....pls let us know if you find them cheap somewhere (Our Mr A's were 26p last week too.........).
I have loads of pasta & rice stored, and quite a few packets of 'instant mash' too - not our fave but a good standby as the price of fresh potatoes seems to have rocketed lately.
For anyone into soup - the campbells/baxters condensed was half price in Morrisons on Sat - I like to use these as 'cook in' sauces when I'm in a hurry, and the mushroom one makes fab 'carbonara' - at 28p a tin they are a bargain!

Incredible! I buy loads of tinned tomatoes - have just looked at Mr. T's website and they have the gall to list these as the "cheaper alternative"!! What happened to "every little helps"? :sad:Obedient women are never remembered in History!

I picked up the tinned plum tomatoes (Value) and noticed they were priced the same as the Value chopped tomatoes, at 26p. When scanned the plum tomatoes went through at 18p a tin.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. When me and my OH were out saturday there was someone selling blooming massive sacks of potatoes for £3 (about double the size sacks MrA sells) we made a mental note to get some on the way home but forgotMight be an idea for us to start keeping our eyes open for signs like that.
Which reminds me there's a farm about a ten minute walk away that sells fresh eggs, so I'm going to go in next time I'm nearby and see how much they are.0 -
Sainsburys basics tinned toms are 21p (were still that price this morning, but don't try my local store, ahem...) .On a mission.0

Thanks brila! I whizzed into Asda on my way past this afternoon and tinned toms were 19p, what a relief, no chopped ones though but as I don't buy those it wasn't a prob!
I didn't think of checking the price in Mr T's on the scanner, will do so though next time I'm in there.
Anyway today I replenished my stocks of toms, beans, spaghetti hoops (dd3's fave!), instant mash and cheap pasta! Also squash for the kids - don't usually buy it, but half term is on it's way and we will have a constant procession of children through the house!
Mr M is still doing the cheapest chick peas in cans, in the ethnic section, but there were none of the poppadums in there, will have to try the big one when I next take the girls shopping. Also got a huge 2kg bag of dried chick peas for £1.99, never find these big bags in our local supermarkets, so I was very happy, even if the checkout chappie did make bean jokes as he put my shopping through!GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -
Re. passata, I wonder whether it would be cheaper to buy tomatoes at the market, blend them and then cook them to make passata, rather than buy the ready made one.
When I was young in Italy just about everybody used to bottle tomatoes as sauce, or whole, for the winter. Even our family GP (who was the dad of one of my friends, so I was there sometimes when he did it!).
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0
