£30+ for a haircut? Gosh    ! MSE has certainly saved some folks some money if they can afford that :rotfl:. I have shoulder length straight-ish hair and have cut and coloured my own for the past n years. It costs me a new pair of scissors, about £7, every couple of years and a box of 'because you're worth it' £6.95 colour every 8 weeks or so. I've been to T & G hairdressers and to the local college but I can't bear anyone 'fiddling' with my hair  , I'm on a pension, prefer to spend my dosh on my family etc etc, so I'll carry on doing it myself. I can understand shorter styles needing someone else to cut them but longer hair is easy to keep trimmed and tidy yourself. I even get complements and asked where I get it done - but I'm not telling ;) .

I get my hair cut about every 3 months and it costs me £10. Used to get it done every 6 weeks but find that growing it longer means I can get away with less cuts. Then again, I have fairly curly hair so the only way you can tell a "bad" haircut is the way it behaves after a few weeks.

I colour my own hair every 8 weeks with "Because You're Worth It" and have probably saved a fortune over the years. The first hairdresser I went to several years ago insisted on washing my hair before it was cut and charged me £30 for a trim and blow-dry. Next time I went down the road to the Unisex barbers and have been going there ever since. I now wash my hair before I go, and they charge me £10 for a pensioners hair cut, dampening my hair first with a little spray bottle and blowing it dry.

Yay!:j I thought I was the only one that cut my own hair, have been doing it for 3 years now and have saved an absolute fortune, round my way it used to cost £40 for a cut and blow dry, that's 80% of my food budget for the week  no way could I carry on affording that, so 3 years ago I borrowed a book from the library and taught myself. I also have shoulder length straight-ish hair and now I get a style I like rather than having to put up with someones interpretation of my request  I also colour my hair and find that I can get away with mixing up half the box of colour and just painting the roots. I also use a colour very close to my natural colour anyway so the regrowth isn't so obvious!:D

BTW I also cut OH, DS1 and DS2 hair. They have simple clipper cuts but I have done spiky cuts for my eldest (when it grows a bit he looks like Dr Who!). It is possible to get clippers that fit in your palm so you can use them in your own hair, which might be a possibility, depending on how long you want the hair on top. It's fairly easy to cut the front and sides yourself, you would only need to get someone to help you tidy up the back. HTH.
SMILE....they will wonder what you are up to...........;)
  • I cut my dh`s hair with clippers and it looks good but mine is short and needs layering at the moment. I did have a bob but there is no way I could or would cut my own hair. Fortunately the colour is sleek and shiny pure silver so that is a saving grace. I think I might do some detective work and sit outside some cheaper salons to see what comes out

Or you could wait till your hair is a little too long, go to a new hairdresser and ask for a trim and if you hate it, go get it done again slightly shorter at your usual hairdressers (assuming the new hairdresser didn't scalp you ;)).

Might be a waste of money, but then again you might end up with a new cheaper hairdresser.

well the temporary uplifting of spirits was nice while it lasted and today we need to take stock re recession and unemployment, so it is back to reality

I have been thinking about my hair. It is short, straight with a little kink and very silver. I like to go for a good cut once every 5 weeks and just have a wash, cut and blow dry. Last time it was razer cut so I have spiky bits on the side and I was in there for half an hour in total. Next time it will be scissor cut. The cost has been consistent for weeks now at £31 and I suppose that is ok relative to posh hairdressers. What do you think of the cost and would you change to a cheaper (unknown!!!!) hairdresser. By unknown, I mean that mine is a good hairdresser and she knows me. I have already changed my next appointment to a 6 week interval. What would you do and do you think £31 is ok (the more I think of it, ie 1/3 of £100 for half an hour!!!!)

I found my hairdresser through a friend. She charges £10 and does it at my home.

In the past I have asked people in the street who does their hair!

I have short straight hair and my village hairdresser layers and shapes it really well. I pay £9 (oap rate) and she sprays, cuts and then blow dries - excellent value but it is a very small village. I remember reeling with shock at the price, when I had my first hair cut in London!! :)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D
