I keep thinking on what I can cut back on to save money recently. I've already stopped buying magazines, junk food (which is how I found my way here!) makeup and clothes unless I need them (liquid eyeliner is a confidence thing with me and at £3 every 3 months, I don't mind) dvds, books, itunes have all become very rare and I can't think of anything else I can cut back on to save money, yet it all seems to be going because of higher prices.

I only seem to treat myself every few months with a night out at a comedy club, Went to the boosh last night, first time since march when i saw Sean Lock and next is Ross Noble in march :rotfl: see a pattern here! (although I am trying to get people together so I can go see Jason Manford tomorrow:o)

I just keep thanking high heaven all my family have their savings with what is classed as a 'safe' bank atm (abbey) I really feel for everyone with banks going under, so to speak, I really don't know what I'd do with myself if that happened.

WEll what a morning we have had here - i burnt half my ear with teh hair straighteners - ouch is the most forum friendly word i said i can assure you - so after a quick run to pharmacist across the road hes put a load of E45 on it and told me to keep an eye on it so that is what im sulking about today.

im worried about the banks, i have 3 accounts - 2 are with halifax (one is a chip/pin card and has DD go through it, the other is where my benefits go into - tax creidts and child benefit) then i have one account with nationwide which is where my wages are paid into. Bf banks with HSBC. Its gotten to the point that i really dont trust my bank anymore so when my money goes in - to whichever account it may be - ive been taking it all out and hiding it away in my home because quite literally if our bank goes down the swanny we are in trouble.

Ive also been sat working out how much money i can save if i shop responsibly this monthand i figure if i spend £50 of my wages tomorrow i should be able ot make that last 2 weeks and then by then my benefits will be in and i can do the same so i can save about £200 if im really careful. It is worrying me to as my bfs work hasnt had much work on lately and there has been mention of redundancies and alot of workers being sent out to other branches, we have no savings - hence wanting to save now - but it is worrying

im off ot plan a shopping list as best i can for Mr T

I'm certainly thinking more about what is necessary spending and what is not, though of course its probably helpful for the ecomony if we still try to spend some money...
We are going out to a chinese buffet in the next couple of weeks for birthday celebrations...necessary?
    Children's school trips...necessary?
Going to spend a few days with a friend that lives miles away...necessary?
Two weddings to go to next month...necessary?

I could really twist myself up thinking about what to spend and what not to spend...I guess its about getting the best deal and making sure its budgeted for....

Isn't it funny how men & women react differently to crisis ? My OH is an ex biker, 6ft, scared of nothing, and quite macho (in a mature way LOL) . Yet he crumbles to a jelly when money worries surface, and just can't function at all.
I'm 5ft, scared of spiders/moths/cows & the dark ....:) - but I get fighting mad and will NOT let them get me down. I think a lot of us women are much tougher than men inside.

ahhh, thank you all my virtual `soppy` huggy friends. What an uplifting thread this has become

The fright appears to be over and now it is a question of time but I am treating this as one of life`s lessons.

1 I will not get into debt, not even on my cc if I haven`t the funds in a uk bank to pay it back 2 I thank heavens that I have a very well stocked store cupboard because we, none of us, know what is around the corner 3 I am glad to be a capricorn in that I knew exactly what my incomings and outgoings are this month and every month 4 I will still scrimp along until we get our savings back

Today the world feels a lot better and the sun is shining

Mardatha, how is your OH today?
Ouch ouch Sammykaye18, hope your ear is not too sore
Glad to hear about the savings Kittie, just a game of waiting really, isn't it?

I spoke to insurance today, they have asked me to write a report on what happened with drawings and they told me dealings with a foreign insurer could take 9 - 12 months. I panicked and phoned them thinking I wouldn't get my car back until then (well, I never been in an accident before and have no idea how these things work) but car is getting fixed, it is just a case of liability and how much of the £250 excess I will be getting back, I talked the guy through the accident and he agrees that the lorry driver was definately at fault and that the police had no right to say that is was just an accident, so I either get the full £250 back or half £125 but it can take 9 - 12 months.
Oh well, it is only money after all, things could have been so much worse, I keep telling myself, and the courtesy car is growing on me, apart from the 3 doors (own car has 5) and I had my no claim protected.

We will all get through this together, we are resourceful and pull together with hints and ideas and recipes. :happylove :happylove

Ouch!! Hope your ear is alright!

I keep on having the funniest image pop up in my head, people running around like crazy, like in one of those 'end of the world' movies and in the middle of it one woman sat in the rubble, covered in fleeces with fingerless gloves tapping away on a laptop with a bobble hat on! It keeps on making me giggle so I guess it's getting me through the day.

Mumoftwo - I hope you get your money back in the end, but like you've said atleast you have a courtesy car and your protected no claims.

The interest rate has just gone down by 0.05% which I guess is some good news if you have a mortgage and your lender passes it on.
