Hello all,
Long-time lurker here... just wanted to say that this thread is so positive and its really good to 'hear' people encouraging each other.
I think alot of people are in a very similar position at the minute. I'm pregnant and due in March, have to get another mortgage deal in place by beginning of March, DH is in the building trade and the work is abit here, there and everywhere so he's been working 7 day weeks to try and get some extra money to put by when we need it..... I worry about all the gas/electric/good/mortgage going up and It just all seems to be doom and gloom at the minute.
so I'm going to try not to worry too much  about the things that are out of my control. But I CAN control the electric, heating and our food bill, petrol etc. It does make me chuckle when I think of us all huddled around our 'pooters, in thermals and fleecy blankets
We will get there... We've got to hang in there.
(scurries back to lurkerland!!) x

I just hopped over to the savings forum for a wee look (having recently opened a KE account) and that forum scared me so much I hightailed it back here with my hot water bottle, chenille dressing gown, furry boot slippers, and fingerless gloves...! I really feel for everyone with icesave accounts (and when i heard the news tonight my thoughts went straight to those of you who have), but I couldn't handle the blaming and hostility over there.
Give me my OS board friends any day. Picturing the fleecy OS army taking on the world, feeding it with a plate of Twink's hobnobs (all my friends are so impressed, btw), some artisan bread, and some slow cooker rubber chicken stew, and cleaning it with bicarb and Stardrops just helps me keep smiling through each day's worse news. You're all :A.

PS Hope this is the right thread to have posted this on!0 -
I had a look over there too. Soon came back here with my fluffy blanket.0

no point getting depressed over the savings situation. Heck we still have some income albeit very small so I have put my practical hat on (again) and copied a list of all the essential outgoings, monthly and yearly. Now I have to see how they balance. People who don`t bend with the flow, break
thank goodness for my bike, so I will go out today with my dh, in the sun and get some free recreation0 -
This current financial climate is certainly 'focusing'.
Worrying is a wasted emotion but re-looking at budgets, expenditure etc is something we can do that could make a difference. I was reading a site from the USA yesterday and a guy on there was saying he would be running his household 'mean and lean'...though very 'American' I liked the sentiment..
Thank you, kittie for confirming yet again the way to go...0 -

Thanks for all the hugs for Icesave depositers. We are amongst them and I went to bed last night feeling very down. However, this morning the sun is shining and Alastair Darling has just announced that the government is going to guarantee all Icesave deposits for UK savers, so I can feel some of the tension seeping away, even though it may take a long time to get our money back. Now I can turn my attention to more positive activities rather than worrying, but like the rest of you, our expenditure is going to be very tightly scrutinised going forward. But we all face a dilemma here, don't we? The less we spend, the more other retail businesses and small firms contract and go bust, the more jobs are lost and then another round of people face the misery and consequences of redundancy. If I could wish for one thing today, it really would be for a magic wand to take away these worries from those who are least well placed to cope with them.0

Just wanted to say to all those affected by the Icesave traumas I'm so relieved to hear your money will be safe now
I'm just listening to Gordon Brown droning on...typical,the first sentence he uttered near enough was to pass the buck and blame America for everything...
I too am hoping all my dear virtual friends are not too badly affected by the worsening crunch, but I'm sure being such a resourceful lot on here we'll all support each other in any way needed
In the last recession we lost our home,I lost my job and things looked terribly bleak but we came out the other side with a little help from our friends and back in those days we never had the internet or a wonderful site like this to help * now I'm getting soppy lol* but you know what I mean
Thinking of all those struggling at the moment and sending positive vibes to you all

:T Just heard the news that Alistair Darling is going to guarantee all the deposits of uk savers with Icesave! So pleased for you all. Hope you don't have to wait too long for the funds.
This is like one of those horrible roller coaster rides, my stomach has been churning with all the rotten news, so I too come back here to snuggle up with my fleece blanket to find some comfort and reassuring advice. A big thank you to Kittie especially - I am now "fuel aware" and have checked out the appliances in the kitchen and tucked away the high energy users including (sob) my lovely coffee maker! Back to the cafetiere for us! I also have a thermos to pop the coffee into once it is made. Actually I have 2 - 1 is for tea!
We have our dd back living with us again and are trying to keep our costs the same or even lower if we can, a challenge in itself but she is quite good having had to cope on very little as a student.
I too worry about our local small businesses and we try, if we must spend, to support those that we value, like our local farmshop. Although we have had to cut back, we still have to buy some things, so now we are trying to be more responsible and think very carefully about where we spend that money. Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.
